The Role
Yeah I enjoyed it from start to end honestly. What I enjoyed the most was the people and how approachable they were to support and make you feel like part of the company rather than just a placement student.
Very valued especially within my team, your opinion is valued as an alternative insight. There are very few staff members which struggle to see beyond your title (intern), and that is where you have to challenge them and show them you are more than "just an intern" (part I enjoyed the most).
My whole team supported and guided me throughout. They were all very helpful.
Due to the nature of my work, it tends to be busy with so much to learn from which I loved. For me, this was the perfect to obtain as much experience possible in my placement year.
I managed a couple of projects at a time, whilst supporting projects for my team. I was doing were important and valuable to the business as they were backed up by having to present project proposals to the wider team including senior members of the company
I think these will help me for both university and my future professional career. There were even unpredictable skills which were developed from experiences such as working wfficiently from home. I could not be more grateful for this experience!
The Company
Calm & comfortable. Colleagues are extremely approachable, from people you work with daily to people in other departments.
Overall, very well set up. The placement team were helpful throughout and gave additional support whenever I asked for it. I was also very grateful for how the whole organization adapted with the whole Covid situation, certainly not an easy task!
Company offers a wide range of training courses, from scientific writing to lean six sigma (project management tools). The placement team also run specific training for us such as creating scientific posters, presentations, and supporting with CVs which is very helpful.

Very appealing, if there is an appropriate role available I would come back. BAT encourages changes and improvements at a fast pace which I really like. The atmosphere is great with so many opportunities around.
The Culture
We were 14 placement students and we did a lot together in terms of exploring the city and going to events. With other colleagues, the company hosts socials including a big Christmas dinner which lets you see another side of your team which was great.
Southampton is relatively average price compared to other areas I've been in the UK.
There are very nice pubs around the area, as well as restaurants and other sorts of entertainment (bowling, cinemas, escape rooms). Slightly more difficult to go now with the Covid situation but generally Southampton has everything you want (especially if you go to the Isle of Wight for great beaches).
BAT arranges socials and there is badminton and football pitches to use after work. Other than that, there are different sport and social clubs around the city, and the likelihood is that some of your colleagues would go to them so it would not be difficult to do them as well.
