The Role
I really enjoyed my time with Handelsbanken. The internship gave me experience on all areas of banking within the branch and allowed me to spent time with each team member to get a feel for their job role. This was a good insight which will be valuable when finishing University and deciding on my future career path. I also met individuals within different teams throughout the company to talk about their department and job roles.
My colleagues were always happy to spend time with me and grateful for the work I completed. My branch manager always showed an interest in my project and after I had completed the project said the information will be used.
Handelsbanken is a very friendly and welcoming team. I got to spend time with each team member who would show me there day to day tasks, give me activities to complete and allow me to sit in on customer meetings. I would have daily catch ups with the branch manager where we would talk about what I would like to do that day/week and give me guidance on my project. There are also regular calls with the HR team to talk about the internship.
I was always busy within the four weeks I spent at Handelsbanken. I spent time working with all the team. I was set a project to complete which I was given time to complete within the working day, I also spent time outside the branch to do research around my project. there also a training and glossary of terms to complete. I had regular skype calls with different departments, this was interesting as it developed my knowledge outside the branch activities.
I was given the responsibility to complete my project, training and the glossary of terms around the time spent with the team, this allowed me to plan my day so I could complete these tasks by the end of my internship.
The internship helped me develop a better understanding of banking which will help guide me on my career after university. I have learnt/developed many new skills, one of these which will help me for university is good admin order. I spent time learning about the banks values and culture which I will take with me when starting my career.
The Company
There was a lovely atmosphere in the office. All members of the team were friendly and checked in regularly to make sure I was okay. HandelsBanken have fika on a Friday which is where the whole team takes time out of there day to sit round and chat with coffee and cake, this was a lovely end to the week.
The internship was very well organised. A laptop was ready for when I started and meetings were already booked in throughout the 4 weeks I spent with Handelsbanken. I was also introduced to the other interns in different branches.
I had multiple sessions with the HR team were the interns would learn about the company. There was also online training sessions to complete throughout the internship. The branch manager and team spent time with me on work with developed my skills.
Working from home
The future prospects are very appealing with Handelsbanken. The bank do not have a set graduate scheme however this allows you to choose how you would like to progress your career. While completing the internship the HR team show you the potential routes and you can take after graduation. The team are also happy to answer any questions you may have. Handelsbanken have a careerPLUS scheme that allows you to gain qualifications so you can progress as a banker. Due to Handelsbankens structure you can also move within different sectors of the bank which is very appealing.
The Culture
I completed my internship during COVID-19 therefore I was unable to meet the other interns however we were able to communicate via skype and instant message.
I was able to live at home while completing the internship so the living costs were minimal.
