The Role
I enjoyed it greatly and think it has been has been extremely valuable for my future career. The amount of new skills I learned exceeded any expectations I had a year ago.
All throughout the placement I felt as a part of the team, not just "a placement" - I was often commended for the work I'd put in, especially when dealing with some of the trickier challenges.
I was assigned a mentor, who was my go-to person all throughout the year. Whenever I felt stuck I was always provided with a lot of help from my mentor, fellow team-members, or really anyone from the department! Everyone was super helpful and open to questions.
I was busy for the great majority of the time, and if out of work, I could always ask to pick up another task to help out with our sprints! I wasn't really ever overwhelmed with the workload or idle.
A surprising amount - in a very positive way. My very first task after done with training was implementing a core feature into the software, which was very "customer-facing", so I really had to step up to the challenge! Luckily I had a lot of assistance and was able to gradually become more independent with the increased responsibility I was given over the year.
I have gained a great number of skills throughout the year, I don't believe there was a sprint (three week period) where I didn't learn, or get an opportunity to learn something new. The training was great, I could tell a lot of effort was put into designing it so you have the right amount of knowledge about the company, its product and values going in. Overall I think completing the placement will be a great factor in my career going forward!
The Company
Just great! Everyone is super open to any questions and ready to help you whenever they have spare second! We also had beers at the pub after work, curry nights, beer and pizza Fridays and all! All of the interactions I had felt really organic and I felt I could reach out and have a chat with just anyone! Someone once told me people come back to ProspectSoft for the atmosphere and I have 0 doubts about that!
You can tell these guys have been doing it for years! The training, mentorship, management structure and opportunities for growth were all there.
I was offered a few security trainings which came in handy. I also had access to on-demand pluralsight and an azure subscription / courses which I could use learn stuff in my spare time!

A few of the placements are offered a job each year, most of the dev department comprises of such placements!
The Culture
It's been great! Everyone was really friendly and sociable!
It was OK, I lived in Oxford, so not the cheapest of places in terms of rent, but being reasonable with my spending it was quite alright!
The few occasions I went out were quite fun! Oxford has a lot of places to go!
