    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • I absolutely loved the virtual internship experience because it showed me so much I did not know about and areas of the business I never knew existed. I was given so much responsibility and genuinely felt like my views and opinions on a range of matters were respected. I was given total support throughout my entire time with Tesco which made me feel at ease. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] set up a great programme and should be very proud of themselves.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Due to the amount of responsibility I was given from day one, I felt as if my input was incredibly valued. I felt I really had something special to lend to my project and the internship brought out the best of my skills and insight in order to produce an amazing result. The exposure we had to wider external and internal authoritative individuals really made me feel important and my work of somewhat use to them in both small and big ways.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • Thanks to the internship managers [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and their impressive and well structured programme, I felt very well supported throughout. Their guidance and weekly check ins were incredibly useful and kept me feeling connected with both them and the other interns. My project managers were also immensely supportive and seemed genuinely interested in my work. They helped pull a few strings, getting us into contact with some really important people who offered great insight.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely think my skills have progressed and developed by miles since working on the internship, whilst the skills I had before have blossomed and I now feel I can relish a challenge. The elearning skills that I have acquired utilising the Tesco resources via learning at Tesco I am sure will help me greatly in the future. I have learnt a lot about fundamental leadership skills and have gained some vital commercial income insight which will stand me in good stead for my future career.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • The internship was incredibly well-structured and I felt it ran incredibly smoothly. You could really see the planning that went into the programme - not only with the general programme but also the individual projects. I was part of the health charity project which I thoroughly enjoyed. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] ( the project managers) set up a loose structure which allowed us to have a lot of freedom with our work and presentations however their was constant guidance. This perfect balance meant we never went of track but still felt independent.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • It was difficult at the start to connect virtually with everyone - Tesco managed this very well but it was nevertheless unfamiliar territory. I understood however that that is the nature of a virtual experience. Despite this, Tesco and other influential interns helped engage everyone socially- arranging coffee meet ups and fun larger meetings. As my confidence grew, the virtual barrier was not so strong and I felt well connected with everyone, especially those who I got close with in my project group.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt Tesco heavily invested in me as an intern. I was granted access to really useful internal information and data as well as having the exposure to a wide range of higher level bodies and people (both internal and external). This made me feel like Tesco wanted me to do well and that they wanted my project presentations to be at an optimal level. I was also granted access to colleague help and was taken through several amazing learning sessions which made me feel very special.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Thanks to the broad range of people we got in contact with and had the pleasure of having virtual meetings with (probably only made possible due to the virtual nature of things), I gained great insight into the working life at Tesco which made me just want to hear more and more about it. We were also constantly urged to reach out to those who worked in a field or department that we were particularly interested in which when pursued was a valuable experience.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Unfortunately, as the internship was virtual I was not able to absorb the feel and culture of the company on a day to day basis in head office. However, the insight we were given and exposure allowed meant that I was able to gauge the ethos and values of Tesco. The individual meetings and the different characters we spoke to reflected the Tesco business so much so that I'm confident I now understand its culture very well.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • If anything Tesco has opened so many more varied and broad ranging career paths ( all within such a business) to me that I am probably more indecisive now that I was before the internship. I do not see this as a negative however, as the experience has simply taught me not to be so narrow minded when thinking about careers. I have recognised my passions more which is definitely the most valuable thing which has stemmed from my virtual experience.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid adequately for my time here at Tesco. Given the fact that the internship was supposed to be 10 weeks long, and was then shortened to 6 weeks virtually due to the Corona virus, I feel as though Tesco as a business have been very generous to still pay us for the full 10 weeks. this has reflected their fair and respectable outlook on the situation. It spoke volumes about the business when we heard about this news as I''m not sure every business would have been so kind.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes there were brilliant opportunities to do this. The Tesco internship team kindly arranged fantastic meetings with a broad range of people including executive members, directors, graduates, project leads and so on. This gave me invaluable insight into the business as well as insight into specific fields and career paths that interested me. We were encouraged to reach out to certain people with certain roles which allowed us to have a completely fulfilling career-orientated experience.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Both the interns and managers came together to enhance the programme, arranging virtual social meeting s and coffee breaks. This gave us all a sense of togetherness despite the circumstances. I loved the weekly check ins every Friday - their relaxed fee meant everyone could come together at the end of the week and just be friendly and chat together along with our managers. I met some amazing people (both on my level and higher up/networking).

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes I did. there were a few mentions in meetings here and there about what colleagues get up to in their spare time, especially what specific teams do together to enhance their relations and friendships. I feel because the internship was virtual we did not catch up on everything that happens after a normal working day in the office - grabbing a drink/ pub quizzes etc. I did however understand the work life balance at Tesco and the sense of connection and that rn between everyone.

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • I definitely would. It was handled incredibly well, especially as this was the first time Tesco has opened up a virtual internship! the sturucture was well though out yet still allowed for enough freedom for it to be amended/ enhanced along the way. It also meant we could work at our own pace/ to our own schedules (within reason) and felt very revolutionary as a leading internship in the realm of Corona virus career movement. I loved this placement; the exposure, insight, people and responsibility given was just incredible.
