About You
Al in all, I really enjoyed the virtual experience. The company put a lot of effort in to making it as good as possible. I had plenty of opportunities to network despite the online environment. I also was able to contribute some significant work to the company, which was particularly rewarding. Obviously there are more difficulties in the working from home environment, but I personally think that Bloomberg did a really good job in minimizing these.
Everyone was really lovely and made you feel welcomed. You could reach out to almost anyone and they would be happy to spend half an hour or so with you to have a virtual coffee chat and talk about their role and experience at the company. Weekly catch ups with managers and team leaders was also good. I was also given work that was actually useful for the team and people appreciated the stuff that I completed.
I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my experience. Everyone was more than willing to help with any questions that I might have and people were available to go through the work and help however they could. I received formal training at the beginning which was great as it meant that I felt more confident once i was working on the more complicated work. I also had two evaluations to receive feedback on the work I'd done.
I think that the variety of skills that i developed during my time working for bloomberg will all be very useful in years to come. I actually learned four different coding languages which will be helpful for my degree and learned a lot about finance and using the terminal which will be helpful for the future. All in all, i think that I gained a lot from this internship and it has been a great place to learn.
The Company
First couple of weeks was centred around training and that was very structured - you had group calls that you needed to take part in and tests on how much you learned from the sessions. Further training in coding was also very structured, and then you had a bit more freedom when you were working on your own thing. It was easy to structure your day using the calendar on the terminal and I was never bored.
Everyone was very positive and engaged throughout the internship. There was no one who found spending time with you inconvenient. All of the other interns were also very nice and engaging. They also arranged a few virtual socials so that you could meet everyone and get to know people a bit better. Bloomberg are very focused on their culture and so everyone was very nice as they focus on collaboration and having a good working environment.
The company invested a lot in me in terms of personal training and development. A lot of time was spent in getting us up to speed on the technology that they use in their day to day. I learned four different coding languages and they spent a lot of time making sure that we were comfortable with the work that we were doing. There was also the opportunity to do further online courses on BU.
I think the virtual experience was able to provided me with a really good understanding of what it would be like to have a full time role with the company. Due to the virtual environment, we were able to shadow client calls or spent time with different reps. I got to see a lot of different elements of the role and took part in morning sprints with my team that also gave me a good idea of what they do.
I think that the virtual experience helped a lot in understanding the company culture. Bloomberg are very proud of their culture and so we had a lot of talks where it was spoken about. They still were able to convey the enthusiasm and collaborative nature despite having most of the employees working from home. The team were all really nice and everyone i met aligned with their culture as they are very focused on it.
I personally had never had any experience in the financial industry. Therefore, Bloomberg was a really good opportunity to get a very comprehensive insight into the financial industry and what it involves. I think it also helped that i was able to speak to lots of different departments within the company so it helped me think about if there were any other departments that I found interesting. Bloomberg is a really big company so it was a good experience.
