  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy constantly throughout the day, sometimes had less work to do compared to other days on certain weeks.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning of my placement I was not provided with lots of responsibility, sometimes I have had to ask for more responsibility and work to do several times. Fortunately by asking, I have a busy schedule.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills, knowledge and experience through FedEx I will use in my final year of university and during my future career. It has developed my confidence and I have grown as a person. I have met numerous people globally who work for the company, which has provided me with key contacts for future job opportunities.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Fantastic atmosphere, friendly, supportive and approachable teamwork at all times. Optimistic environment was present on a daily basis, feeling reassured and calm during challenging or stressful times at work. Peaceful and quiet atmposhere so that I could conduct my project work and focus successfully. Great communication throughout the team, all members are understanding, caring and I have created close relationships and friendships with them. I am never afraid to ask questions if struggling with work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I started my placement on the day allocated which was great. However, my job title on rate my placement was advertised differently to what FedEx contracted me. Also, in the first few weeks of the placement, it took 6 weeks to obtain and email and laptop from the IT department. I would reccomend that this needs to be conducted more efficiently and quicker in the future for all students, as there is a limited amount of work to achieve when you have no access to a laptop or email - it is difficult to contact key stakeholders and conduct work successfully.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company provided me with a PMO training 2 day course, which was useful to learn about my function, how a project functions, how to manage projects, handle teams and how to conduct a project in it's life cycle. I also had to complete online training for QDM courses. These training opportunities enhanced my skills, knowlledge and experience in the business, allowing me to grow and develop over the 12 month period. I am aware that FedEx carry out lots of training within different functions to develop the skills and knowledge set of their employees.

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future prospects and job opportunities are fantastic. I am intrigued to consider the opportunities once I graduate from university. The starting salaries are reasonable and there is lots of opportunities for me to travel with FedEx and pursue my career internationally, which is something I would love to accomplish. There are multiple functions I am able to enter for my future career. I would reccomend they implement a graduate scheme, as this will be very attractive to future graduate employees.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I made long life friendships with the fellow placement students. All friendly, kind, caring, generous and humourous individuals. It was great to share our experiences, whether positive or negative with the fellow students, as it allowed everyone to support each other during difficult times. All of the students communicated and had lunch together every day and now we have developed long life friendships; we will all keep in contact with each other now that our placement has come to an end.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Atherstone is a small town, with a lack of people and vibrancy to the area. The cost of living is not expensive; reasonable pricing. It has a few shops, cafes, supermarkets and pubs in the town centre, although lacks atmopshere. Without the students also on placement with me, it would be very mundane. Atherstone is based in Warwickshire, a 25 minute drive from the centre of birmingham which is useful and has direct train links to London, if travel is required. The area needs to be improved for the future, as the HQ is so big and with the area lacking an atmosphere, it lets it down.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife does not exist in Atherstone. There are a few pubs in the area, which close early. The nearest nightlife to visit bars and pubs which open later are either Nuneaton, Leicester, Tamworth or Birmingham. With no nightlife or ambience in the town, it really lets it down. There are very minimal restaurants to have a drink or nice food in the area either. I am glad I did not move to live in Atherstone for the year, as it's so quiet - it's like a ghost town!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were not lots of activities to get involved in outside of work. I lived from home for the year, so I continued going to the gym every day after work. I also signed up to complete the London Marathon 2020 with the FedEx team, so I started running from the beginning of my placement which has improved my health and fitness levels. FedEx have a running club, which should be promoted more throughout the business. However, there is not lots of acitivties to get involved in, I just had to pursue these on my own accord.
