The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I was worried going into it that the virtual element would take away from my enjoyment but it has not. Each day felt like a new challenge which really excited me. I enjoyed the work I was doing and was never bored as there were so many different tasks I could get involved with. The internship involved placement specific work as well as community aspects which made everyday new and exciting.
My colleges really made me feel valued. There was never a silly question and they were always really happy to jump on a call with me to explain something or to set a new task. My team were always happy to give me feedback which made the work that I was doing seem valuable. They always explained how the work I was doing would be used in the future of the bank so I did not feel I was doing menial tasks.
my manager was always available to give me any support or guidance I would need. He ran a policy whereby I could zoom call him at any time if I had queries or wanted more work. we had regular meetings to feedback on my performance. although I could tell he was very busy he never made speaking to me seem like too much effort. The regional manager also had regular check-ins with me to check on my progress.
I was always very busy. Members of my team sent me lots of work to be getting on with. I also made sure I had lots of meetings in my diary which ensured I was constantly moving from one meeting to the next. The internship also comprised of an internship project and a community aspect which kept me busy when I was not doing placement specific work. There were certainly no moments where I was bored with nothing to do.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. I was asked to deliver presentations to a large team which felt like a lot of responsibility. I was also asked to complete prospecting documents which will be used by the team to search out for new business, thus this felt like a rather important job. I also completed MI analysis which was put into the real systems with only a few tweeks by the Relationship Manager.
I have really developed my interpersonal skills whilst being at the bank. I have learnt how to hold fluent and informative conversations with people. I have learnt the art of making personal and professional relationships. I have also learnt the importance of being proactive which will serve me in any future career. By working with other interns and members of my team I have learnt the importance of collaborative skills which will serve any future career.
The Company
It was a virtual internship so it is hard to answer this question. However, the team had weekly coffee break chats which felt very friendly and relaxed. I witnessed a realy good relationship between more senior and junior members of the office thus there was no tense atmosphere or overarching hierarchy. I also attended social gatherings via zoom and a coffee morning which all helped to create a friendly atmosphere. There were time of course when a professional atmosphere was more apparent.
It was extremely well organised. I can not fault this aspect one bit. We were well prepared before the internship by the emerging talent team through weekly zoom calls. During the internship there were well organised development days and sessions. I was put in contact with my manager in advance of the internship which enable me to get to know him better. Meetings and events were always scheduled well in advance. It felt like the program coordinators really coordinated the internship well.
HSBC invested in me a huge amount. I felt that a core value of HSBC is feedback which leads to personal development. I had regular feedback sessions with many members of my placement team as well as with people coordinating the internship. After I compelted any piece of work people were always happy to have a chat with me to feedback on how I did. we even had a day dedicated to our personal sustainability which helped me to develop.

Working from home
extremely appealing. I really enjoyed my time as an intern and so I will certainly look to gain a place on the graduate program. I really liked how HSBC runs as an organisation, its core values really appeal to me of honesty and development. Its emphasis on feedback and personal development were especially appealing. Further the international element of the company and the importance it puts on different cultures is something I will look for in my future employer.
The Culture
Yes. I thought this would not be the case as it is a virtual internship. However, we had regular social events every Friday in which we could get to know each other. Further events were also put on like paint classes and ERG events in which I could further get to know my intern cohort. We had group chats which allowed us to stay in contact and they were a really good point of contact throughout.
n/a as virtual.

Yes! Lots! HSBC has really strong employee resource groups and they put events on regularly. I attended an event by the ERG balance which promotes gender equality in the workplace, it was really insightful. The impetus HSBC puts on community also allowed me to get involved with volunteering opportunities. I was also involved with a project which discussed disability in Hsbc and how HSBC could improve which was really interesting. As it was virtual physical socialising was limited.
