The Role
A pandemic hit but Capital one did not waver! they stuck to the internship contract in every way and worked hard to ensure we get the proper support even as we worked from home. A perfect combination of social events, training and work. You are treated as part of the team and work on projects that are actually important, so that kept me motivated.
I joined all agile ceremonies as part of the team, i even ran some of the refinement sessions. They always asked for my opinion even when i didn't know what they were talking about. When I was stuck for weeks on the same story nobody was blaming me irritated by my slow pace, instead they kept motivating me and helping me to get it done.
I had a weekly 1-to-1 session with my manager who was always prepared to help. And on day to day I had a mentor and buddy to help me out. But really anytime I had a question or needed help I asked in the team chat and anybody who was free would reply or jump on a zoom call. It could have been better if I had a scheduled session with my buddy and mentor twice a week or such, just so I am sure they have blocked that time out for me.
Because we had to work on 2 projects, Monday I was just too busy I didn't know what to do. I would have clashing meetings regarding both projects and I would have to skip out on some. But other than Mondays the rest of the week was more balanced with a Lunch break and tea breaks that I could fit in.
This was one of the best aspects of the internship. I had 2 projects to work on and one of them was my own, I could push to GitHub and merge, I could do PR reviews for fellow teammates. I had no less responsibility than a normal engineer
Most of the skills will be useful, but some are just specific to Capital One. Since its a big company many of the tools I used were in house built, so other than these everything else will be very useful
The Company
I can not answer this to the full extent as the internship was remote due to Covid. But from going to going to the office twice during interview stage and although I was meant to fell anxious and nervous - I didn't. They did an amazing job at making it a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for a potential candidate, so if I was to work within the office I imagine it would be even better.
Considering they had about 3 months or less to completely refactor the internship into a remote internship I would say they did an amazing job. All the training sessions were done through zoom, or resources they gave us access to. External training was provided to train us in the working remotely environment, and different socials to get us to feel more comfortable with other interns and our teams. We got our Tech sent to our door too.
Capital One is ready to pay for any certification you want to achieve, plus they provide resources for you to learn. I decided to take the AWS cloud practitioner exam during my internship and I had numerous resources they provided for me to learn from as well as paying for the test. When I requested Feedback from those I worked with they all gave very constructive Feedback that was very long and useful, it was clear they put a lot of effort into it!

The Culture
There are zoom sessions throughout the week and that you can join whenever you want and talk to the other interns who have joined. There were also Work From Home games competition which was really fun and got to interact with other interns. Even games like murder mystery and escape room were setup via zoom. There was a project that only interns worked on which gave us more time to work together and pair program.
I was working from home which is not in the same area as where I would have worked.

There are many societies you can join from like women in Tech or teaching tech.
