    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed it. The team who was organising it made such a big effort to move everything online. Even though the whole thing was remote it was still amazing and I can't imagine it any other way! I've learnt so much, met so many great people and had a good time. In addition to learning and working we also had a lot of events to socialise with other people in the company and the interns. Overall it was a really good experience and a nice way to spend the summer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like I belonged from the very start. Everyone was welcoming and helpful. I got an immense amount of support so starting was nice and easy. I always felt like I can ask questions and the feedback on my work was on point and helpful. I was encouraged to talk to different people in the company and I always felt equal to them, even though they were in senior positions. The work culture there is amazing.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Every intern had a manager, mentor and a buddy. The manager often reached out to me to make sure everything's fine, and if I had any questions they always found answers for me. We had weekly catch up sessions as well. My mentor and buddy were helping me get up to speed with the tech side of the internship. We had lots of pair programming sessions, which were really helpful and I feel like I learned so much thanks to that.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I can definitely say that I was never bored. We had two projects going on, which was nice because I got to experience two different sides of the tech department. It was also nice because I could shift between them when I needed to change things up. I felt supported throughout and no-one was ever pushing on getting things done. It was more focused on my learning and wellbeing, than completing the stories. So even though I was very busy at times because my own ambition told me to get things done, I was never too stressed about it.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It was so surprising to me to see that they're giving us real life projects to do. I was trusted with a big project, and it felt great to be able to produce something which I know the customers will use and enjoy. I was NEVER told I couldn't do something because I was an intern. If I wanted learn how to do something, I could, even if that would mean I'd need extra training. That boosted my growth SO SO much.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel like I've learnt so much during my time there. I'm definitely a better engineer and developer now. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the technologies I've used, and I'm sure I'll use them in the future in uni and in my career. The first two weeks or so consisted of training, which was invaluable. They focused both on soft skills and technical skills which was amazing and will definitely be useful to me.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was great. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and I felt like I belong. There's many fun events to bring everyone together, some being bigger, company sponsored activities. And there's also a big focus on the employees wellbeing which is great! The company cares about your development too. There's even some volunteering you can engage in! The work culture is amazing I really do recommend working there. It really shows how everyone enjoys working there.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The programme team did such a good job on setting this up. We had a lot of fun events, so despite it being remote it still had a huge value. And even though it was the first time they've run it online, it seemed as if they've done it many times before - that's how good it was. The onboarding was also a breeze. They've sent us the tech a few days before we started and we've set it up on our first day.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had so so many training sessions! From soft skills like presenting, working remotely, personal brand, setting expectations, to more technical, project related things such as AWS and web. A lot of devs in the company have set up sessions with us to go over some concepts, and many of them offered to pair program with us as well. During these 10 weeks I feel like I became a well rounded developer, ready to delve into bigger projects.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • We've been told about the grad scheme, and it seems amazing. You get to rotate a few times and experience different teams and technical stacks, and choose which one you like the most. This is a great learning opportunity, and it also lets you figure out what exactly you want to do. Many of the interns get a grad scheme offer and I think that's really good. Also, the company really cares about your development.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There's a whole graduate community which welcomed us with open arms. The interns also had their own meetups and I feel like we got along very well. The support network from people who've been in the situation is a great thing to have and capital one nailed it. I'm impressed how big the grad community is and how much fun they're having together. They run their own events and projects and are well known in the whole company.
