The Role
This was a really positive experience. I was involved in different areas of the company and was able to contribute to different projects to really help out the team. Although it was virtual I still felt very much involved in the company and the extra sessions put on by the company were really interesting and informative. We also had the opportunity to talk to the CEO Bernard Looney which was exciting and unusual for such an important person in the company to make time for the interns.
Really valued, I felt that the work we did was useful for the team and that they really appreciated what we were able to achieve in the limited time. People were all really happy to give up their time to help us and it was really easy to get in contact with other members of staff in the company to organise meetings. It was nice to get the opportunity to network with people in different and interesting roles and they were all happy to help.
We were given lots of support. There were meetings twice a day with our line manager to ensure that we didn't have any issues and also to report out what we had done that day so that the other members of the team knew how we were getting on. We also had weekly calls with the HR team to ask any questions we had and it was also really easy to contact anyone for help outside of these organised calls.
Really busy, at the beginning we had a lot of meetings and skills sessions. Then later in the internship we were busy with the work that we had been set but there were fewer meetings. On certain occasions we possibly had too many meetings, but most of them were optional so if you were feeling overwhelmed you didn't have to attend - just often the meetings were interesting so it was difficult to cancel them.
For the first bit working with my 'buddy' I compiled some research for her to make sure that the correct decision on a certain piece of equipment was made. Then for the main report this was a literature review as well as a recommendation report for a key piece of equipment on a major company project. The work I did will be referred to when making the decision on the best piece of equipment to purchase so that was a lot of responsibility.
We had useful skills sessions at the beginning of the internship in subjects like presentation skills. This particularly is useful as it was conducted online by an outside party so we really got to improve our virtual presenting skills. This is something that was useful during the internship and also is very likely to be useful in the future. Furthermore, I am now a lot more comfortable using video calls which will be useful for other online applications.
The Company
Can't really comment since this was a virtual internship. However, from what I saw in group meetings and when talking to members of staff, I think the atmosphere is really nice, it seemed pretty relaxed and there didn't seem to be people who were overworked. Everyone was really happy to give up their time to help interns so that felt really supportive and I never felt that I was being a burden to anybody which was nice.
Pretty good, especially since the internship was reduced in length from what it normally was. There were a couple of IT issues in the first few days, but that was mainly just a problem since everyone was working at home with their own computers so it was tricky for IT to help. Other than that everything worked really well and seemed to have been thought through and planned in advance. It felt like a smooth operation.
They spent a lot of time working with the interns. People in other groups or sections of the company were always happy to answer any questions or to arrange a meeting with one or a group of us. The company also hired an external company to teach us presenting skills and to also run a workshop with us where we presented and they gave us feedback which is really useful. This is a skill that I was very happy to spend time working on.
Working from home
Really appealing. I am really interested to work for bp in the future and would love the opportunity to join. I was also able to talk to people who were currently on the Graduate scheme which seemed really good. Also, at the time the company was going through a round of redundancies but where the grad scheme was protected which was really nice to see that the company is still keen to invest in the younger generation.
The Culture
It was difficult because the internship was virtual, but there was an intern social committee who organised events for everyone. These were things like speed networking and 'Lunch and Learns' where they got interesting people from around the company to do talks during lunch time so that we could learn more about different parts of the company. We also had a few group socials during the internship so that we could get to know each other and our line manager better.
