About You
My line manager and supervisor were extremely supportive and interested in my project. I had daily stand-up that really helped to keep me focused and use my time as efficiently as possible.
Everyone I reached out to during the internship was very helpful and happy to talk to me and to discuss questions I had about my project. I received frequent feedback from different people in my team which showed that my work was very much appreciated.
I worked in an amazing team. Several team members suggested into which directions I could go and supported me when I did not know how to start a task - for example when it involved new software or new principles.
especially time management and prioritising tasks was something I practised daily during my internship.
The Company
extremely well structured. A clear objective in the project given, IT was sorted before the official start of the internship which allowed for a very smooth start of the internship.
Everyone I worked with was very friendly and positive. They were a lot of fun to work with and everyone was very open and it was clear that some deep friendships had developed between most team members over the years which translated to an overall very productive and supportive work environment.
Given the limited time frame of the internship (6 weeks), this was difficult for BP to do. But I received coaching in basic coding and the early careers team organised several sessions ethics and compliance, different aspects of BP as well as an interactive session on practising presentation skills.
As most companies might be shifting to a more flexible model of working with more remote working this "remote" internship gave a really good insight into what this flexible working style could look like.
Although office lunches and coffee breaks with colleagues were not possible, the way people communicated, worked with each other and the general atmosphere was still something I got to experience and is something that reflects the company culture quite well.
It was an absolutely amazing internship and I felt extremely lucky to have the opportunity to work with so many intelligent and driven people. Because of that, if given the option, I would choose to start my career with BP.
Everything Else
I was paid the normal intern salary and it's important to note that by working from home, less money needs to be spent on transport or food which means that more of the salary is left at the end of the month.
Yes, all employees reacted very positively when interns reached out to them. I arranged a few chats with some employees who were not linked to my project but which I arranged just to find out more about this person's work and their experiences in BP. It was very easy to connect with people and just adding something into their Teams calendar was often enough for them to accept the invite and chat to you. Everyone was very honest when asked about their experiences.
They were very engaging and it was clear that a lot of work had gone into organising them.
Yes, this seems to be an important aspect of working for BP in general. It is generally encouraged to get involved with some things additionally to your work. Employees can get involved in different business groups like BP pride for example. There are also different committees formed by challengers to organise different events (social or technical). BP also sends about 25 people to the One Young World Summit who will then take the input gotten from One Young World and suggest things to be changed within BP to address environmental or social challenges.
Absolutely, it was a great experience. It involves some hard work and challenging yourself but it is also very rewarding and I felt very happy and supported throughout the whole internship. The application process is long what it is definitely worth it. So, if you are in the midst of your application - keep going, your work will pay off. And if you don't get the internship, I already learnt a lot by just going through the application process so I would say it is definitely worth applying.
