The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire internship experience. Although the internship this year was carried out virtually, I was still able to experience that community feeling at Morgan Stanley via virtual coffee chats, the giving back activity, the technology intern competition and the mid-term escape room event. This has really exceeded my expectation given the short amount of time the HR team had to redesign the internship into a fully virtual programme.
My team, my buddies and my HR contact have all been very supportive throughout my internship, making it easy for me to settle into my internship. Besides, Morgan Stanley generally has a very open and friendly culture. Almost everyone in the company will be happy to have a chat with you regardless of what team or role you are in.
My manager has a lot of trusts in me in delivering the results and taking ownership over my project, which I really like because it gave me a good opportunity to showcase my skillset. Although my manager is quite senior and therefore was usually quite busy, he always found time to have a chat with me about my project, enabling me to update him on my progress and get the support I need to complete my project.
I would say most of the time I had a good amount of time to complete the tasks that I needed to do. That said, there were times when a lot more tasks needed to be done at the same time, but they had always been manageable.
I was given the responsibility to take ownership over a proof-of-concept project, contributing my own ideas along the way. Like I said, my manager and my team have a lot of trusts in me in delivering the results and taking ownership over my project, which I really like because it gave me a good opportunity to showcase my skillset.
I have learnt quite a lot of technical skills through my project, which will be helpful for my future career. We were also given a finance training at the start of the internship. More importantly, we were given soft skills/professional skills training throughout the internship, e.g. networking etc., which I think is immensely crucial for future career development.
The Company
I can't say much about the physical atmosphere in the office because the internship took place virtually. But what I can say is that everyone that I interacted with had been very friendly and welcoming, which made it a comfortable environment to work in.
I was genuinely surprised by how well-organised the virtual internship was, given the short amount of time for the HR team to make the adjustments. The entire internship was conducted very smoothly, including large-scale webinars involving participants from multiple international offices.
Throughout the internship, there were many soft skills/professional skills training sessions. We also had access to many online learning platforms, which are good resources for gaining more technical skills.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
I find future employment prospects with Morgan Stanley very appealing because it has a great people culture. Almost everyone is very friendly and open to having conversations. Besides, a hidden benefit of working with such a large organisation is that there are a variety of opportunities across the firm. Hence, it is possible to explore different roles and join different teams throughout your career with the firm.
The Culture
Although the internship was virtual, there were still many fun social events such as pub quiz, escape room challenge, giving back activity etc.
Not applicable because the internship was virtual.
Not applicable because the internship was virtual.
Morgan Stanley has a strong giving back culture and there are plenty of events happening outside of work for this cause.
