The Role
BP offered a large range of opportunities that were not work-related. They had coffee catch ups were people from all over the business could meet up on a call and just talk about anything. Regardless who was on the call people were incredibly welcoming and engaging. They also had lunch and learns when experts in a given field would just come and talk and take questions. There was always something for everyone to do if you wanted to.
The nature of the company and its values meant there were very rare occasions (in my case none) where you would have a conversation with someone and they wouldn't make you feel welcome. Colleagues on your team most likely had been in your position and understand the difficulty of the work you're undertaking and so were happy to help with understanding but would also acknowledge any successes or significant progress in your learning or with your project.
Given the shortened time frame of the internship, most people met up with their supervisors every day as a minimum, but more than likely you'd be talking to your supervisor very frequently throughout the day as well. As much as your supervisor understood that you were being assessed since the work you were doing was actually valuable to them and company, they gave a high level of support in making sure you had all the resources you needed to be able to complete your project without being spoon-fed.
Every day was very very busy, it was incredibly tough especially in first few weeks because most of the morning with pure meetings, then learning sessions in the afternoon, you ended up only have 2/3 hours to do some actual work for your project. However, this is most likely due to the nature of the internship only being 6 weeks instead of 11. It was also a very good opportunity to work on your time management skills and prioritisation.
As stated previously, the internship was very short, so there wasn't enough time to be able to get to full grips with everything and undertake more projects and work that required a high level of responsibility. I think it would have been unwise of managers to give any high responsibility jobs to the interns because the jobs wouldn't have been done very well and would have put immense pressure on the students given the learning curve already.
A lot of what I learnt was very disciple based but the most applicable skills were soft skills i.e teamwork and communication skills. I learn a lot about business, which is relevant for my management modules as well as presenting skills. Due to my project, I also had the opportunity to work on my coding and learnt SQL, which may become relevant in my final year project. I also learnt how to create pivot tables in excel.
The Company
Everyone you meet is always up for a laugh and joke before getting to the serious business. If you're an outgoing person you'd enjoy yourself.
Considering the short amount of time they had to restructure everything the internship was done very well!
The company offered many many courses and learning documents, they gave us daily learning sessions on all the different disciplines in the company.
Flexi Time
Working from home
The company is going through a current restructuring so jobs seem incredibly rare at the moment but definitely still worth trying!
The Culture
All the other interns were also very like-minded, spending time with them was always very fun!
I was working at home so it couldn't actually be any cheaper.
Due to coronavirus, I stayed indoors the entire internship.
Due to coronavirus, company policy was that employees would follow government guidelines.
