The Role
It was an amazing experience, the work was both challenging and interesting. There were a lot of opportunities for me to learn and work. They provided many resources to help us understand and adapt to the work culture and the business. Such as training courses and seminars where people from different parts of the business will explain the work and development that are on going. My colleagues are very kind, knowledgeable and they are delightful to work with.
They are very welcoming and supportive. My supervisor has provided me a variety of tasks which allowed me to understand the business operation thoroughly. He also provided me help when I needed and very constructive feedback on how I can perform better. The rest of the team is great to work with as well, they've created a great environment that foster good communication and team work. My opinions and ideas are very welcomed by the team.
I feel that I was fully supported by my manager. I know who should I go to when I require assistance and constructive feedback was always provided to help me improve. In times where my manager is very busy, I would always be able to find some other means to seek help, I rarely find myself stuck in somewhere without knowing where should I go to for help. During COVID-19, I received updates from my manager regularly and felt well taken care of.
It was well balanced. I was given plenty of tasks to work on on a given day. Occasionally there are more urgent tasks that needed to be done fast where I would be busier. Transitional period where I was changing team was a down time where I was given less work and was relatively free. Overall, my schedule was relatively flexible, it allowed me to attend seminars that I'm interested in, go shadow someone to learn about what they do and attend STEM ambassador activities.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility. I was doing a lot of electronics circuit analysis in the beginning and learning different software to run simulations to investigate a test failure. Initially, I was regularly communicating with my supervisor on how I should proceed. After some time, I was allowed to have control over other investigations once I've demonstrated my ability and learned enough to carry things forward on my own. Similarly in all other tasks I've done, I was guided when necessary until I feel confident enough to carry the task forward on my own.
I think there are a lot of hard skills that I've practised during the placement that would be hugely beneficial to my future. Such as different software and analytical tools, technical knowledge about electronic systems. Moreover, the soft skills I've learned will be essential to helping succeed both academically and career-wise. I was trained to communicate efficiently, work with professionals from different disciplines. I learned the engineering processes and standards in the industry, which provided me a foundation to understand engineering processes in other disciplines.
The Company
The atmosphere is great, the office building is very nice. Open office area and desks are not assigned, which allows you to sit with different people depending on the projects you are working on. There are different social clubs organized and you can explore your interests through them. People are very friendly and they organized a number of social gatherings throughout the year.
We were given induction and number of talks and online courses for us to learn about the business and the culture they want to maintain. I was accompanied by a supervisor who provided me tasks and guidance. My objectives have been quite clear every week which allow me to set a clear schedule. I was offered the opportunity to rotate to other parts of the business, however, that was being cut short due to COVID.
The company invest a lot, I was attending a number of online courses, talks from people working in different areas of the business explained what they are developing, my manager gives me regular feedback on my progress... The company has solid guidelines on personal development and have a lot of online resources employees can utilise for themselves.

I'd love to be able to work in Rolls-Royce in the future. They have employed brilliant people in the company, and I think it is a great organization to work for. But due to COVID, future employment opportunities seems a bit grim. There are a lot of uncertainties nowadays in every industry but I think aerospace is being hit hard.
The Culture
Yes, we get along very well. We've had a lot of gatherings throughout the year and always have lunches together. The early career committee organized quite a number of activities as well, and the people in the workplace are very friendly.
I lived very close to my workplace and managed to find relatively cheap place to stay. The area is relatively quiet and if I am seeking for socialising activities, I would usually travel to Birmingham city area which is 1 hr away. I think Birmingham area is relatively affordable.
I think the nightlife in Birmingham is quite alright, if you're into pubs and clubs, there are plenty. There are some good restaurants in town as well.
There were quite a number of social gatherings, I was involved with supporting STEM events as an ambassador as well. There are definitely a lot of opportunities when you look for them.
