The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at Experian. The company has a friendly and inclusive culture, which was brilliant for my first experience in the corporate world.
I was placed in a very experienced and intelligent team, where I was treated as an equal by all team members. I felt that they all were genuinely invested in my learning.
My line manager was constantly checking up on me and making sure that I was having the best possible experience. I also was assigned a mentor who I worked very close with, which was great as it resulted in me learning loads from him.
In the first two weeks my diary was constantly full, meeting with different people from around the business, gaining a real insight into how the business worked. I was then set a solo project for the remaining 8 weeks, which kept me busy but resulted in quite a lot of working on my own. Most days I wouldn't have any meetings, instead I would be working on my project and occasionally asking team members for help.
I was set a project which resulted in a tangible product which the company would use after I left, so I had the responsibility of making sure that it was done to a high standard. However on a day to day basis, I didn't have too much responsibility.
I became proficient in using Tableau and SQL, as well as gaining a deep understanding of the industry. This won't assist me in my mathematics degree inn any way, but it certainly increases my eployability.
The Company
My internship was virtual due to Covid-19, so I missed out on the office atmosphere. However to some extent I experienced the atmosphere through our daily team meetings, which were enjoyable. The culture is friendly and relaxed, with a strong work ethic.
The summer internship isn't set up as an organised programme in the same way as companies like PWC and Deloitte. Instead I was one of only two summer interns and we were placed in teams which best suited our abilities, working as fully functioning members of our respective teams. I much preferred this set up as it meant that I got a more natural experience of working for the company.
Experian massively invested in my learning, teaching me a wealth of industry knowledge, as well as Tableau and SQL skills, in a short period of time.
Working from home
Experian would be a great company to work for and I would be very keen to work for them in the future. Although I wasn't officially offered a job, my manager certainly expressed his desire for me to come back after I graduate.
The Culture
There was not much of a social scene, although this was due to Covid 19. We had a few zoom quiz's.
Not applicable as the internship was virtual due to Covid, so I lived at home whilst working. Although I hear Nottingham is fairly cheap.
Not applicable as the internship was virtual due to Covid, so I lived at home whilst working. Although I hear the nighlife in Nottingham is great.
I think Experian do offer a lot of opportunities, but as I was only here for 10 weeks and the internship was virtual, I wasn't exposed to any of these.
