    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Enjoyed it very much! Working virtually was definitely something that the company did a great job of managing and making it feel like working in office. Everyone that I worked with was super friendly and were always willing to help which was great for the first few weeks whilst you get on your feet. There are also great systems in place to ensure that you are well taken after, so you will always feel great whilst working there.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As previously stated, everyone that I worked with was super friendly and were always willing to help which was great for the first few weeks whilst you get on your feet. I found that in my team I was being given actual work to do instead of some throwaway project that wouldn't get a second glance so then when we would review work my colleagues just saw me as a team member and so just really incorporated me into the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a mentor who would help me with my work, but also a manager who would catch up with me personally frequently. The support given by my mentor was great and if there was anything that I needed clarifying or just needed pointing in the right direction on, he would be able to help me in minutes. The guidance I was given by both my manager and mentor was second to none as they constantly offered feedback on not just technical work, but on how I could improve my soft skills too.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Typically I worked standard office hours, which is typical in this profession. However, Capital One has a great work balance policy and so will promote team building exercises and other activities that will break up the day. The company is also very flexible on the hours you work, so if you need to take a bit longer lunch for whatever reason aslong as you work the mandated hours by working longer or starting earlier the company will support you

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Again, as stated previously I found that in my team I was being given actual work to do instead of some throwaway project that wouldn't get a second glance. This was great because it motivated me to produce work to a high standard. I was given completely free reign within the scope of the work I was doing which was good as it promoted me to develop my understanding of my work which in turn made the work turn out better.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned more then I ever thought I could. I worked mostly with backend stuff, so I worked with lots of Amazon Web Services which I would now say I am confident using personally and is definitely something that I probably would never have touched until going into a job. My team also promoted me to do some frontend stuff too as it was something that I had never done, as well as learning test frameworks thoroughly so I could help pull the weight with testing too.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Considering the virtual working had never been planned the company did an amazing job of sorting out a great experience for us. Everything was very well planned and organised which is a testament to the adaptability of the company! ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

  • There is so much material to learn from and a bounty of courses you can do for whatever you really could want. • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As it states I was offered a job by the company at the end of my work. The feedback I was given was great and it was really good to see the company values me as an intern enough to offer me a job:) ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah everyone got on extremely well! As stated before everyone was really friendly and we had lots of great social events virtually some which involved a competitive edge! ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It isn't bad for the area, Nottingham has fairly decent prices. Coming from living further north for a few years though it definitely is slightly more expensive for some things but widely it is very fair! ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I lived in Nottingham when I was younger so have quite a good understanding of the night life. For my personal tastes and the places I would go I would say it is awesome! There is a very diverse scene and depending on what you want to find you will certainly be able to find it! ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • This was during COVID-19, so there wasn't many no, however we did alot of simulated activities which would have been done in real life. Be it virtual escape rooms or quizzes the company sorted out alot of extra activities. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎
