The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my year at the Met Office. The office is a great place to work and a very friendly environment whereby everyone is willing to help out.
From the first day I was given responsibilities and helped when needed. The only time I felt out of place was during busy operational periods where managers and colleagues had to fully concentrate on work - but after this learning and feedback was continued.
Always had time for me, no matter how simple the issue I had was. Within my team and other teams i felt valued and supported throughout.
During busy operational periods I would work time over on a number of days, but then during less busy periods I could control my workload to a level which suited my development
At the start not too much responsibility was given to me. This gradually increased throughout the year but managers made sure that I was comfortable throughout.
My skills were developed massively throughout the year and will undoubtably help me in my degree and further education
The Company
Nice friendly atmosphere. Everyone willing to help out
Being the first placement student at the centre it was a learning process for everyone at the start but by the end of the year, I had merged a way for my development and future placement students
Difficult to have an established knowledge in meteorology without previous knowledge. However, my colleagues gave me everything I needed to develop
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Difficult to say during these uncertain times (COVID-19)
The Culture
Yes very good social scene with social going on throughout the year and social within each team as well
Cost of living in Exeter is very high. Cost of socialising is around the same as any other city.
Decent nightlife, with Exeter being a small city it is not the best but still enough to keep busy.
Lots of social clubs and societies with the met office which were well run and great to be apart of
