The Role
My placement year has been incredible. Even though onboarding was completed online and my whole placement has been online so far, I don't think the onboarding process could have gone better. We had a two week handover period with daily check-ins with the the previous placement student, meaning I wasn't worry about anything because it was always sorted at the end of the day. The marketing team and the whole of Box have been so welcoming and have really been helpful in answering any questions I might if had. We have weekly lunch meetings where we often play games over lunch and it has really been such a lovely job, I can't wait for the rest of the year!
All colleagues have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. I have regular one-to-one's with my manager where we discuss how my week is going and whether I have any questions. At Box there is no sense of hierarchy and I have very casual conversations with very senior staff on a regular basis and I feel that my work and what I have to say is valued exactly the same as any other member of staff.
Throughout the whole application process I had regular updates from the recruitment generalist and HR team and when I had secured the placement there was lots of communication between the HR team and myself. We had bi-weekly introduction/ ice-breaker games in the run up to my start date so that I felt even more welcomed when I started my job because I had already met the cohort of placement students. There was 2 weeks of onboarding with a very detailed agenda of stuff to be completed, where there was always someone on hand to help.
The first 2 weeks were very busy but that was because there was lots of content to get through in terms of learning about Box. I was very glad for this as it meant I knew lots about the company. My workload has decreased now and it is manageable, especially as I now have uni assignments due which I need to be able to get on with after work. No one expects you to work after working hours and the work is very rewarding.
There is a large sense of achievement because you are given your own projects to manage, with lots of help where needed. You have daily tasks which you are expected to complete yourself especially as you get more confident. It all depends on what projects are currently running and your manager may set you as the project manager or the very low admin role, it is hugely dependent on what is available. Sometimes i have had to ask for more work and then I was given more responsibility.
I have developed a wide array of skills ranging from project management to presentation and communication. For me personally I have really valued the market research skills that I have developed and I think I will use them throughout the rest of my career. There are scheduled career development meetings that are taken seriously in terms of you (the placement student) getting what you want out of the placement. The skills you want to develop sway what projects you are involved in and what co-curricular activities you are added to. I am currently the co-chair of Box's Women's Network and It has already provided me with so many skills, I can't recommend joining an Employee Resource Group enough.
The Company
This is a strange question as I have been working from home but I thing Box's culture definitely shone through the Zoom calls which i have been having as everyone has a fun and grateful attitude to work, although who wouldn't when you're surrounded with such lovely people? We have fortnightly 'all hands' which are where the whole of the EMEA region has a Zoom call celebrating success and trends within the business where people/teams are congratulated and win prizes. You definitely get out of working here what you put in.
Very organised. There was a full expectations list with lots of documentation that I could always refer back to. There was also a visual 'how to' guide which included everything from how to set up your calendar to how to raise a purchase request in the online platforms. Box really exceeded ,y expectations here and the HR team was incredibly organised in the run up to the placement too, making me feel most welcome and not very nervous at all about starting.
There were frequent career meetings with your manager where your progress would be monitored and developments would be progressed in terms of what skills you want to develop. Box has its own learning platform where you can complete numerous courses in generic workplace skills. Box also has 'Learnfest' which is a week of learning and live courses run across the globe. You are given lots of responsibility and managed in way that will allow you to develop skills but you can ask for help whenever.

Working from home
Very appealing, I have not worked or even heard of somewhere with a working environment as great as Box. I really hope I can make a positive impact this year within the marketing team and so far so good! I would be delighted to work for Box in the future, because from the start I have felt so welcomed and valued in the workplace, with enough responsibility, but not too much to help me excel my own skills.
The Culture
Yes! Even though we are not in office the placement students and I have had various quizzes and I have met up with a few colleagues who are also in the area (social distancing was obeyed). There are many digital events that you can get involved in from a cocktail making masterclass to a bring your dog to work event (pre-coronavirus). There are so many ERGs to get involved in and there really is something for everyone, the young professional's network is very relevant!
It is based in London, so rent and just about anything else is expensive, but Box have a generous salary that will definitely cover these costs for you. You won't be able to afford to go out for dinner every night but its definitely a step up from student living! The best thing is, is that Box provides free lunch, coffee/hot drinks, breakfast and snacks, so you don't have to waste all your money on an expensive lunch!
Very good, London has something for everyone, don't think there's much to be said here. Also there is a rooftop bar in the office with a mini AstroTurf for those hot sunny days. Opposite the office is a cocktail bar and plenty of restaurants. The office is also directly next to Old street station on the Northern line so transport is very easy to manage. Additionally there are lots of quirky bars a bit further down in shoreditch which is very close.
A few colleagues are part of a netball club and I know there are also music clubs and other sports clubs. Everyone's very welcoming so Im sure if i was to ask someone to play sport or do something they would be up for it (within reason). The direct messaging network that we use, called slack has many 'channels' which are basically groups of people and you can set up your own group. I know some people had their own fantasy football league too.
