    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • It was a very insightful and interesting experience, in which different virtual events allowed me to learn more about the various graduate opportunities within BP, from more engineering and science based to data analysis and finance. I also enjoyed the confidence building workshops and found them very useful. It could have been slightly improved by sending out clearer emails about the different sessions, as I did not receive the link to join some of them. There could also be an in person event organised for the future, once the COVID situation improves.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt quite welcomed, as I I could ask questions when I had them and the answers provided were friendly and precise. I also had no issues in actively participating in the confidence building session and sharing my answers with the presenters, who were very encouraging and gave me useful tips on how to improve. Overall, I fell that the networking session with other peers provided an excellent opportunity to connect with others as well. The fact that the experience was online though conteibuted to the 8/10 score, as there was less interaction than with an in person event, but of course this was the correct course of action to ensure everyone's safety.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received some support in terms of being able to access the links to the online meetings and sessions. These were sent out to the participants by email, however sometimes they did not include everyone in the mailing list and I could not access some events. On the other hand, in terms of materials provided there was sufficient guidance, as some documents to read were sent out to the participants before the confidence building sessions and discussed in the meetings.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel that the skills learnt in terms of communication and confidence building were excellent and will definitely be useful once I leave the university environment as well. I consider them to be fundamental in the workplace, along with the teamwork and leadership skills that were also developed. The experience did not simply provide skills for the future but also iseful insights and information about the BP workplace and the roles of graduate employees, which will be greatly useful when applying for jobs after my studies.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • It was well structured because we were provided with a timetable of when each virtual event was going to take place, however this was only done half way through the experience. Moreover, the sending out of links to join the meetigs and workshops was not always done properly, so I was unable to join specific events. Overall, given the difficult circumstances due to COVID, this was a good organisation for the time being and hopefully the running of events will be smoother in the future.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The atmosphere at all meetings was always friendly and welcoming, as each employee was patiently anwering our questions and allowing us to ask as many as we liked. They were also clear in their explanations and provided useful information for us. The possibility of speaking freely to other placement students was also a great way to lighten the atmosphere and allowed us to create further connections with students from different universities and countries. It was also a very comfortable and intercultural experience, as there were participants from a variety of countries.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company provided a variety of presentations and workshops to inform us of our possible careers within BP, therefore they were very useful for developing an informed choice about our future. The confidence and communication workshops were also extremely useful to develop skills that will help us to secure the career path that we wish to aim for. Overall, the company provided payment to all participants, but this was not directed to any specific training purpose.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The events gave me a broad overview of the different positions at BP, including engineering and science related as well as finance based. It was very interesting to learn more about the roles and gain an insight into their daily life and tasks that they complete. However, it was not as detailed as I expected, and I feel like I would still need to do a lot of research before fully understanding what type of role I wish to apply for.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The experience included several presentations on both technical roles at the company and extracurricular activities organised by the employees for the company and the external community. There are a variety of events organised, from socials, sports and skills development to community aimed ones like support groups and gender equality movements. In general, this overview made me understand a lot about company culture, specifically its interest in protecting and engaging with the local community, creating a positive impact.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The content explained in the various presentations was very insightful and I will definitely take it into account when deciding my future career. It made me explore different roles and what each position entails as well as the specific impact within the company. However, it was only a broad introduction, therefore I feel like I would require more research and look into other companies as well. I would then need to compare my options to make an informed decision.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • The company paid all participants for this experience. The money arrived in due time and the exact amount offered was received. I feel like it was a just payment for the activities we did and for the fact that we were unable to physically attend the experience but had to listen to all the presentations and workshops virtually. Hopefully in the future a similar event wil be hosted in person again, without additional remuneration required.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • The events consisted of different presentations delivered on different roles within the company all explained by the employees working in those roles. We were not really networking with them, just listening, but there was the possibility of asking questions at the end or contact them on social media if we wanted. We were given opportunity to network with other students who participated in the experience though, which still proved useful. We could not meet the emplyees in person due to the current circumstances, but hopefully a future event will allow us to do so.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • They were virtual opportunities, hosted through software such as zoom or microsoft teams. There was only the opportunity to freely network with other students, not with eemployees. In addition, we were only told about social experiences and opportunities within BP by the employees, but we could not attend any due to the current COVID situation, as it would be unsafe both for students and employees. The ones described though seemed very engaging and a great opportunity for employees to participate in non work related activities.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, many of them were described in one of the virtual presentations, from social events to sporting activities. There was also the possibility to support the pride and gender equality groupas as well as the one dedicated to accessibility for disabled people. There are also business resourve groups and many opportunities to enrich both individual and group skills within the company. Overall, the presentations showed that BP offers a wide range of activities for employes to get involved with, both in terms of training and leisure time.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • Yes, I would highly recommend it as it was very informative and allowed to understand the company a lot better. I also understood about different career paths possible as well as other activities to get involved with. It was probably not as effective as an in person event due to organisational issues, however I would suggest it because it enriched my skills and proves to be an invaluable experience when appliying for opportunities in the future.
