About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my internships experience. It was very well planned and organized. The both the team that I worked with were helpful and friendly. They did not only help me receive a good learning experience but they also made me feel like I was truly part of the company and team. Virtual internships are definitely hard to organize, but they did an excellent job and I got the best experience possible considering the circumstances.
I felt very valued while with the team. I received experience through both doing things on my own and having them explained. HR made sure to check in with us frequently so that we were being well taken cared of and everything was working out well. I got the impression that we mattered and that they wanted us to gain from the internships as well and not just the company. In addition, everyone helped us feel welcome and understand what it is like to work at R&CO.
I received a lot of guidance during my internship. First of all, I was paired with both a junior and senior employee as my buddy and mentor respectively. This gave me the ability to have someone to talk to about my experience and that I could bring questions to. I thought that was a really beneficial set up because sometimes you do not want to ask certain questions to a senior employee so then it is good to have someone to ask with whom you have more of a informal connection with.
I think they have had a significant positive impact so far. For example, I am currently taking a valuation class. In this class I have a head start due to the experience I gained during the internship with many of the topics covered. Additionally, I have been able to use the proficiency in PowerPoint that I developed during my internship to my benefit in a few of my classes. My presentations look a lot more sleek and I think it will help my grades in those areas.
The Company
It was very well structured. The first week of training was well executed and it was very clear what was to happen at any time and how we were to join each session. I was hesitant because I though it would be a very difficult thing to organized but it turned out great and well above my expectations. During my time on the desk, it was similarly well structured and I rarely felt unsure about what was going on and what to do.
The atmosphere during my internship was really good. Everyone seemed to be happy within the team and I think most us interns were extremely excited to join the company. Generally, everyone seemed keen on us joining and wanted for us to have a great experience like many of them had during their internships even if our experience was very different due to the circumstances. I would say that I was pleasantly surprised with how everyone seemed to be happy about their job and the team, which I think is not always the case in investment banking.
They seemed to really care about that we would learn a lot during our internship. Both the training and time with the team made it very clear that they wanted us to succeed and learn as much as possible during the five weeks we spent with the company. They really tried to make sure that we understood everything and everyone was happy to help explain any questions that we had. I got to take part in a few calls to understand the work from that side as well which I was very happy about.
I think it gave a very good understanding. Going in to the internship I had a general idea but now I feel like I actually know what an investment banker does day to day. The fact that I got exposure to senior members of the team also helped me understand what their role is which was fun and interesting. Obviously, if it was in person I probably would have gained even more insight since I could have seen what people do a bit more. Regardless, I think they did a super job in giving us exposure to the job.
I think it did a good job. It is tricky to do virtually since the best way to truly understand is by being there and interacting with everyone and getting first hand experience. For example, its hard to judge if people are friends outside of work when everyone just log off etc. But everyone was very helpful answering questions about the culture and I think their answers were genuine. Generally, I felt like I got a good understanding of the culture of both the company and my specific team.
Very valuable. I felt like I truly got the full experience and I now know what to expect from this path. It can be difficult to judge as a student what a certain path is like so getting first hand experience was great. In addition, people were happy to explain their own path and how they got there which helped me understand everything better. In think the experience will be very helpful in my own decision.
Everything Else
I was paid and reimbursed well for my experienced.
Yes there were great opportunities for networking. First of all, the training week had opportunities to meet other interns, even ones that I did not work in the same team with which was great. They also made sure that our mentors were with a different team that we had requested in order to be able to better understand other teams within the bank. For me that was very helpful as I it helped me gain perspective regarding the team I was in.
Due to the experience being online it was obviously difficult to do any social event. We did however have a team call three times a week which was great to get a look into what was happening within the team.
I was told of a few different things that they do. For example, they were currently involved in a charity event among other things.
I would definitely recommend this virtual experience to a friend. I had a great experience and learned so much that I will have use of in the future. In addition, I really enjoyed working with everyone in my team and it was a lot of fun. Virtual experiences are obviously different from in-person ones but I think if you have to do a virtual experience (which is likely due to the current situation) this is definitely the one to do.
