The Role
I throughly enjoyed my placement at VWFS. It was an invaluable experience which helped me to grow both as a person and as a professional. I got the chance to work with a wide variety of stakeholders across the business and was given the responsibility to lead my own projects. I gained so many skills and made life-long friends and relationships which will prepare me for my future career after university.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. From day one I was made to feel like one of the team. Regular team meetings highlighted how my work was vital to the team's progression and achieving the objectives set by senior management. This gave me a sense of purpose and motivated me to produce my best work.
My manager (and team) supported me enormously throughout my placement. It was their guidance and advice which allowed me to develop my understanding of my role and enhance my skillset. This was achieved through monthly performance reviews as well as bi-weekly 1-2-1 catch ups. In these meetings, I was free to raise any concerns or questions I had. I owe the success of my placement to my manager who taught me so much over the 14 months.
Everyday was a busy day during my placement at VWFS, which was just how I liked it. Each day consisted of regular tasks that I was solely responsible for and I also got involved in team tasks which increased my workload significantly. This being said, I was never overwhelmed by my workload and support was always offered to me if I felt I was struggling.
I was given huge amounts of responsibility during my placement from managing my own projects to presenting at the end of year sales conference. My work added value to the team and helped us fulfil the goals set by senior management. This was the key motivator for me to put extra effort into my work.
The skills I developed on my placement were invaluable. Participating in presentation and excel training courses will be the most useful skills which will transfer over into my university work and beyond.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is really friendly and welcoming. Everyone was always willing to assist you if you needed help with your work. In my department, we went on regular nights out and social occasions which was a really good way of getting to know the whole department at the start of my placement. I felt very fortunate to be in the Fleet Business Performance Department.
My placement was well organised from start to finish. We had a familiarisation event 2 months before we were due to our start placement. This was a fantastic way to get introduced to all of the other undergraduates and organise living accommodation. This event also allowed you to meet your manager prior to starting the role.
VWFS opened up a lot of opportunities for me such as excel training, a mentoring scheme and a powerful presentations course. However, my team were the main source of training and personal development which I am extremely thankful for.
