The Role
I enjoyed the project related tasks and activities where I had been given responsibility to undertake on my own. However most of my work was extremely administrative and repeatitive and thus I found it difficult to remain motivated.
Initially I felt like just the "student" amongst my fellow colleagues. However once I gained their trust and could show my talents then I became one of the group and I was able to develop strong bonds both professionally and personally with my colleagues.
My manager suggested some e-learning courses, that I should complete, and these were beneficial to me. However after about 6 months I came to a stalemate where I felt that my learning and personal development had come to a halt and I was not encouraged to develop or use my skills to my full potential.
So far I have experienced 2 weeks where I have been really busy. Other than that I feel that my workload has been too light and there have been times when I have very little to do. However this meant that I could experience a relaxed pace of work, with rarely being rushed off my feet or experiencing stress due to having too much to do. On the other hand, having nothing to do, can be extremely boring and you experience no sense of meaning or value to your time spent at work.
I felt that I had been given moderate levels of responsibility, and as time went on I had more tasks delegated to me as I became knowledgable and skilled in doing them
I have significantly developed my PC skills which will undoubtedly help me. Also I feel that my confidence has been boosted dramatically. I have experienced a "real" working environment and picked up some keys skills during my time here.
The Company
I worked in a small office, so there was a close community. I feel that we worked well together. However often it was too quiet and lacked an element of "fun" which was needed to boost morale and make the job lively and inspiring.
Extremely well co-oridinated, as there was a large student community at Xerox, and in the beginning you got to socialise with fellow students and live together, because Xerox arranged temporary accomodation for you which was a great help and one of the positive aspects of the placement scheme.
I attended two training courses, which lasted a few hours each, at the start of my placement. After that my personal development was left up to me, i.e. undertaking e-learning courses at my own leisure.
Company Parties/Events
Xerox has a very good company culture and atmosphere, and I get the impression that the staff are looked after, especially considering the low employee turnover. Culturally Xerox is a very appealing company to work for, but for me personally, finding a job to suit me within this company is a more difficult.
The Culture
I worked in a small office away from the other students, so I was the only student there. However if you worked on the main site, you would get the chance to work with other students, socialise and have lunch together etc.
Evidently the cost of living was quite expensive being on the outskirts of London. However it was nice to have the extra money to treat myself to things I wouldn't buy when I was at university.
There were a few nice pubs, but only one nightclub, and therefore if you wanted a good night out you would have to travel further a field. Central London was only a 40 minute tube ride away if you wanted to be really adventurous
Not really, as work and personal life remained two separate entities.
