The Role
I really enjoyed my time at J.P. Morgan and especially the team which I worked with. It was a privilege to work with industry experts. It was not my first experience in Investment Banking but this one truly was special and I will remember it. In addition to, I get very early exposure to the industry and ownership in the work I provided. I can only say that the effort and work I put to secure this internship was worth it!
While it may seem that J.P. Morgan is a big establishment and that may involves a lot of hierarchy and bureucracry, I clearly did not feel that way. Instead, I felt that my my team was really approachable with a flat culture. I was often invited to give my opinion and view even with a meeting involving senior managers. and this is something I did not experience in my previous experience where I was considered only as an intern.
The success of my internship was not only thanks to my skills but clearly to the time and support my team provided me. While it was a very busy time and everyone was working hard, my buddy and my other teammates were always very helpful and took time to explain to me thing I did not understand and check in with me. The guidance was always clear and I knew what I had to deliver.
It is busy as someone can think about Investment Banking. I was within one of the product group and while sometime the workload may look like a lot, my managers always took time to check in with me and gauge the workload I had. I would say it was perfectly manageable and did not feel any particular big workload. The time I spent with my team was always very enjoyable and I was involved in interesting topics.
I was given responsibility early on as I had previous experiences in banking. the trust my colleagues and senior put on me. They were really approachable and they did not only gave me a very simple task of an intern but they acknowledge my skills and gave me ownership on more technical work. I was very grateful for the amount of responsibility during my time at J.P. Morgan. Compared to other experiences, this was definitely something very valuable.
I received very useful training at the beginning. We had various technical training such as Corporate Finance, Excel, financial modelling and even PowerPoint formatting. While some of the courses were a refresher as I have a finance background, some course was definitely very useful such as the modelling course and the use of database specific to my product groups. I also received a special boot camp dedicated to the product group I was including some legal lessons.
The Company
People were very approachable, culture-wise it is a winning culture, not unlike other internships I did in the past. You truly feel part of something ambitious and the energy and passion from all the teams was really a major driving force which attracts to only give your best. the atmosphere and aura was one of the kind at J.P. Morgan and truly one of the perks of my internship this past summer within the investment banking division.
The workplacement was very well organised . the firstw week was organised as a general finance refresher and technical modelling. This was followed by a product specifc bootcamp which provided all the required materials. this was then followe by an introduction of the team and detailed missions and assignemnt to do during the placement. I can say that the internship was very well set up and I never felt I was lost or did anyting irrelevant.
J.P. Morgan as a company but also my team did invest a lot in myself. I was constantly challenged and this is how I improved. I was sometimes not enough confident about myself but I was able to overcome my weakness thanks to my manager and my teammates. I feel very lucky to have been able to not only develop my technical skill but also to develop my soft skill and presentation skill. I can assuredly say this is a key benefit of this internship.

I was fortunate to have been offered full time to join my investment banking team again for next year. I feel J.P. Morgan, in general, provide future employment as long as you are the right candidate and the right fit. The recruitment process and hiring process is as competitive as someone can expect of a bulge bracket such as J.P. Morgan but they are fair as they only pick the candidates that are fit to their ambitions.
The Culture
As it was COVID, this was difficult, but there was some virtual after work drinks which were organised on Friday. We constantly kept in touch with other placement students thanks to social media and did several zoom. As investment banking is a demanding environment, keeping in touch with your fellow colleague is very important. I had various occasion to stay in touch with them and develop true friendship even after the placement time. I definitely had good opportunity to develop a social scene at J.P. Morgan.
