The Role
I really enjoyed the internship at JPM. I think an important driver for this was the team who organised many virtual events where we really got to know the team. This included senior speakers, deal presentations and "a day in the life" talks from analysts. Through these events, we really got to understand what the work and team would be like regardless of the fact that we did not experience our summer internship at JPM in person.
I felt like the colleagues at J P Morgan really took the time to get to know us and help us with our case studies during the internship. Because of this, although we could not contribute a lot to real day to day business, it was clear the team members were still willing to invest a large portion of their time in us and this dedication gave me the feeling I was valued in the team.
Our supervisors were always available to us for guidance and we could always schedule a call if necessary. We had a direct point of contact with the staffer with whom we could discuss if necessary. In addition, we could contact whoever in the team we wanted to reach out to, and they would almost always find time for us to help us out with our case studies. In addition, analysts were extremely helpful during day to day business.
I think working at an investment bank like J P Morgan will undoubtedly result in busy working days, but I think from my prior investment banking experience, I would consider this the perfect balance between too busy and not enough to do. It's hard work, but that's what we signed up for. I think J P Morgan also offers ways to flag it when we would become too busy through the internal systems they have in place.
During my internship, I did not get to work on any real deals due to compliance issues, and hence I could not really contribute to the team. Consequently, my work did not carry much direct responsibility for the team and this was a bit of a shame of the internship. I would like to mention though that due to the virtual setting and short duration of the internship the responsibility we would be given was limited anyway.
As I will start full time within J P Morgan, I think that this virtual internship experience was an excellent way to prepare myself for the career in investment banking which I will want to pursue after my master's degree which I will complete this year. I think that this internship was also a great way to check if this is really what I want to devote my career to after my graduate studies in London.
The Company
Due to the virtual internship experience I can comment limitedly on this, though I think that from talking to many members of the team it is safe to say they have a great culture. This was exemplified by the events they organised for us to socialize with them such as a pub quiz wherein we got to introduce ourselves and the team would informally be introduced to us one by one. This really gave a good impression.
Though the internship was short due to the current COVID pandemic, the internship itself was structured really well: the overall internship programme team had organised a training and numerous events, and the seniors took time to organise more events for us so that we could really learn a significant amount in the short internship duration. I think that this really exemplifies the opportunities which J P Morgan offers its interns and it's a shame we could not see the full programme.
The firm invested a significant amount in us in multiple ways. Most importantly, I think the firm did an excellent job by partnering with Financial Edge to offer us 4 days of training which was directly relevant to the work which would do in investment banking. Moreover, we had pre-internship modules which we could complete to improve our own understanding, and we got many internal pieces of training on al ofl the company applications we could use.
J P Morgan converts a significant amount of its summer interns for full-time positions. Hence, the prospects of landing a full-time offer within the firm are great and I personally also got a job with the firm. I think that, if you want to start a career in investment banking, a summer internship like this is an excellent way to improve your future employment prospects. If you perform well in your internship, it is common to receive a full-time offer within the firm.
The Culture
Due to the virtual experience, socialising was limited to our peers. However, during the training and numerous other opportunities, we did still get to meet our peers. In addition, I called a lot and zoomed with the interns who were also placed in my team. This was an adequate way to develop a good social scene amongst my colleague interns, though, of course, being in person with them for 10 weeks would have improved this significantly.
