The Role
It was a fantastic internship experience. Despite the virtual nature due to Covid19, we were truly able to gain a strong understanding of the role and the culture at J.P. Morgan. Everyone was immensely helpful and willing to give their time and advice to the interns. J.P. Morgan has a very strong culture of teamwork and this certainly shone through during the internship. Throughout the programme you are always kept busy and are given exposure to numerous senior management.
I felt incredibly valued by my colleagues. Right from the start, I felt very welcomed by the team, who always made themselves available to speak with myself and the other interns, despite their very busy schedules. We would have daily morning briefings, during which myself and the other interns within my team, would provide our opinions on the markets. The team always valued our opinions and always gave good feedback on how we can further develop.
I was given good support and guidance throughout the process. My manager was always available to answer my questions and always encouraged me to reach out to him. At the beginning I was given clear targets on what will be expected throughout the internship and every week I would have a review with my supervisor on the progress I had made in reaching those targets. I felt supported throughout the internship and never felt hesitant to ask for help.
Throughout the internship I was very busy every day. Our schedules were always full with: - Tasks from the team - Virtual meetings with analysts across the floor - Speaker events with senior management - Networking events with analysts/associates across Markets - Numerous diversity and inclusion events (particularly for promoting women within the workplace) - Virtual trading games Everyday was immensely engaging and these events certainly enabled us to gain a strong understanding of the role and culture at J.P. Morgan.
I was given a good amount of responsibility. Everyday, myself and the other interns in my team were responsible for giving a morning briefing on what happened the previous day. We were also given individual projects to work on throughout the internship. We would then research and develop this project and present it to the team at the end. I felt as though the work I did was valued and gave me a good understanding of the role.
Yes the skills I developed will undoubtedly assist me for the rest of my life. Despite the internship only being 5 weeks, I feel as though I have learnt an enormous amount. We had one and half weeks of training, which enabled me to gain a strong understanding of the fundamentals of markets and the different asset classes. While with the team, we were able to go more in depth and learn a huge amount about the specific products.
The Company
Despite the internship being virtual, I feel as though we were able to gain a good feel for the atmosphere and culture within the office. There appeared to be a fun, exciting atmosphere within the office, with the culture of teamwork truly shining through. All colleagues were very engaging and clearly never had a dull day. The internship certainly highlighted to me that this is the sort of atmosphere I would like to work within in the future.
The internship was very well structured and organised. With this being the first virtual internship, I can imagine it must have been incredibly hard to pull off, however, throughout the process I was very impressed by how clearly organised and fluid the internship was. I constantly had things to do and never felt as though it was not engaging enough. The clear internship structure enabled me to gain a very good understanding of the role and develop strong skills.
J.P. Morgan undoubtedly invests a significant amount in our training and development. I learnt an enormous amount throughout the internship and always felt well supported. The training week was very engaging and enabled us to develop a good understanding of the fundamentals. While with the team, they would spend a considerable amount of time to teach us about their role and they were clearly very interested in seeing our personal development. There were also numerous diversity and inclusion events aimed at further promoting women and individuals from minority backgrounds in their careers at J.P. Morgan.
Healthcare/Dental
The future employment prospects are very appealing. Every intern has the opportunity to convert their internship to full time if they perform well during the internship. The internship was an invaluable experience and at the end of the programme there was no doubt in my mind that this is the career I wish to pursue in the future. Towards the end, we learnt about the future career development when working full time which was interesting and exciting.
