About You
I enjoyed the virtual experience because I had the chance to meet multiple people in the industry by just scheduling a time/meeting with them in the calendar. Despite it being a new environment for everyone, there was a good set-up and we had good software to be able to communicate with each other smoothly. We did a range of individual and group projects as well as some fun games in the last week of the internship. We also met a lot of big panelists from the industry.
During my time at the firm, I felt somewhat valued. It was a challenging situation to be able to communicate with a lot of people individually due to the virtual nature of the internship, but they still fully focused on the interns and managed to spend the few weeks of the internship with full focus and importance on the program. I did feel valued because I would get quick email replies and responses when I tried to communicate with anyone in the firm.
Given the virtual nature of the internship, we received a lot of guidance and support. There would always be a group of people available to support and help you at all times. We had to set-up a lot of software and resources in our machines, so we did receive plenty of support at all times. I never felt like I could not ask someone about anything during my time at the virtual internship. Everyone would help you or contact the right person to help you.
Despite the hard situation, the skills I developed during this program and all the events I attended in the program have really helped me understand what banking is from a different perspective. I now have clear whether I want to pursue a career in banking or not and have had the experience of seeing the workload and expectations. All the skills learnt are currently helping me with my degree and beyond as I want to go into the same line in industry
The Company
The virtual experience was structured quite well. Given the time that the firm had to prepare this whole virtual internship (which was not a lot), I was quite surprised with the actual preparation and schedule of the whole virtual experience. I got the chance to attend panel events, speak to people in industry as well as work on individual and group works with different groups of people. We also had a lot of peer networking sessions to meet fellow interns
The general atmosphere during the internship, within the staff members and my fellow interns was really great. Thanks to a lot of the networking sessions organized by the company, we had the chance to create a very friendly environment during the virtual internship. We had a lot of panelists talking in the weeks of the internship and they were all very friendly and keen on learning about us. We did a few games, like an online escape room, in the last few days which made the environment even better
Since the beginning of the internship, we were given access to the training platforms and resources that are given to all of the company employees. We had two 4 day long training sessions, one based on more about banks and the other one was more technical and the technology side of the bank and where they are heading. I believe these were great and done my true professionals so they provided a good value to me and it was a great learning experience
We had a whole training session which was 4 days long about the company history, values and culture. Furthermore, the environment and community we had created during this internship experience really helped me see how friendly and helpful the people in the company are. The culture was absolutely great and hearing other panelists who have been working there for the past 30 years was also great to hear and encouraging. I did get a sense of how I could see myself in this company culture
Everything Else
Despite the changing conditions of the program, regarding the program length, they still compensated us for the time worked and kept the bonus for any difficulties, IT material or re-allocation we might have had to do. We were paid adequately for the hours we put in the work on weekdays and it was fair for everyone. I believe the compensation, compared to other of the major competition and banks, it was amongst the highest ones and a fair compensation
There was a lot of networking opportunities to meet other graduates (who joined last year and went through the same internship in the past), other senior managers and presidents and also fellow interns in the program. There was a lot of speakers as well that were able to share their journeys within the company and also from all the different areas and departments of the company. We had set slots and schedules to do this networking and set-up meeting.
I would definitely recommend this virtual experience to a friend, it is a very unique and valuable experience for those wanting to get into the sector and learn more details about how banks operate.
