The Role
This internship was a really good way to get to know the business and the specific job. It was a really good experience through which I learned a lot of new skills and got to speak to really encouraging people from the business which were always more than happy to explain and give further information on their own career experience. The routine I had working with other interns on team porjects and individual projects gave me a really good overview of all the different tasks that the job required.
Value was one of the key things of the internship. I feel it is essential to feel valued in order to provide good work and environment. Whenever I spoke to my colleagues I always felt my ideas were being heard and I could easily speak out whenever I had questions or wanted to raise an idea. As a conclusion, I really felt that the work I was doing was valued within the team I was working with.
I was impressed on how, despite the virtual setting, I felt I was part of something big. My team and I had daily meetings in the morning to see how everyone was doing and to distribute tasks. All my work received proper feedback, which translated from the appreciation of my colleagues. It was incredible to work alongside people with similar interests. I could learn a lot from their feedback and got the opportunity to impressively improve my work.
The internship was a really busy period. It is a lot of learning and a really big learning curve. Combining both desk work and case studies, amounted to most of the hours from my day (morning-evening/night). In addition, and as part of the process of learning, correcting feedback was also time-consuming, however, it felt as one of the most satisfying parts. In addition, throughout the internship we took part in different trainings which were essential to conduct our work but, which took quite a big amount of time weekly.
Responsibility was one of the key aspects of the 2020 Virtual summer internship. Being the internship virtual, it was a key point to be responsible and structure your weeks. I had to make sure I could plan my week in my calendar in a way that i would meet all the deadlines required, but still leave some time to meet with people (through virtual meetings) and interact with the other interns in the same division.
I study Mathematics with Economics at UCL and this internship was really important to help me develop more important skills. I learnt how to analyse things from a different perspective (since risk analysis requires a deep understanding of many different outcomes). In addition, the teamwork and communication skills will also be really handy in the future, for both group projects and to present ideas both at university projects and in my future career in banking.
The Company
Despite being virtual, the atmosphere throughout all the meetings was really encouraging. We had different kinds of meetings. The proper working meetings were quite informal, in a sense that you could contribute easily to what was being said. The atmosphere was so professional when working and there was a really good relation with our teams. We had some extra socials and quizzes organised which was good to learn more about the other teammates working with us.
It was meticulously organised by the HR and Credit Risk Teams. AT the beginning of the internship we already knew the plan for the rest of the month and each activity's time slot. We had extra networking sessions with VP's and MP's which were also planned at the beginning. The internship had a lot of really important trainings and socials for the interns which made it a lot easier to get to know people through the screen.
The investment was really big. We first did an IB summer training alongside all the EMEA interns, which was extremely helpful in getting to know a lot more about accounting and the banking industry. Then, we had specific Credit Risk trainings conducted by professionals from the teams at JP which were essential to do our desk work. In terms of development, feedback was the key point. We were provided weekly feedback which made it easier to know the areas of improvement.
Working from home
The career prospects at J.P. Morgan are really appealing. I was offered a job starting on the next Graduate Programme. I believe that this will give me a really god starting point in my career. Also, J.P. Morgan has a global reach, which makes it really good for seeking new opportunities within the banking industry. The community of J.P.'s employees really is what I would say makes a difference. All the people I worked with love their jobs.
The Culture
The social scene with the other interns was really good. I forged really good relationships with them through the Summer Internship. Thanks to the few team projects we did, I got to spend a lot more time working and speaking to my placement colleagues, which made it a lot easier to get to know them properly. My team had a really nice scene, it was really collaborative and we always commented on our working weeks and how the internship was going so far.
The internship was meant to be in London's headquarters. London is quite an expensive city to live as rents tend to be quite high compared to other European cities. I assume that is also why the salaries given to summer interns in London tend to be also a lot higher than the rest. However, JP gave a really extensive allocation package in order to deal with the difficulties this problem could have caused with interns.
As a result of COVID, there wasn't any nightlife available.
As the internship was virtual, I was working from my hometown, but definitely we still organised some really cool zoom calls with other interns to get to know each other better. Outside working hours, The Credit Risk Summer internship team organised a really nice Virtual Scape Room in which all of the interns and VP's and analysts played. It was really appreciated that they took the time to get to know the interns that were working with them.
