The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year, I learnt a lot and made contacts that have been helpful for my career since.
The ideas I had were acted upon and the team encouraged me to get involved with group projects
Everyone on the team were supportive but I was especially supported by my line manager with weekly catch ups, team meetings and monthly reviews.
I had projects that I worked on throughout the year, but I also had day to day jobs that I had to complete but most importantly it's a time to learn so I tried to make the most of spending time with different teams and learning about what they did on a day to day basis
I was given responsibility of projects such as organising Open Farm Sunday amongst other projects. This allowed me to build on my network of contacts and organisational skills.
I developed many transferable skills such as relationship building and communication but I also learnt a lot about the agriculture industry, I spent a lot of time within the poultry industry and this proved to be and invaluable experience.
The Company
I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere in the office, it is a nice, open and airy building with plenty of hustle and bustle. The open plan layout also makes it easier to access people.
It was a well organised placement and because they've had placement students previously, they understood that it was about helping to develop the person as well as being an extra pair of hands in the team.
Co-op ensured that I left with all the experience they could have possibly given to me, from project management to public speaking.

Co-op was a great place to work and there have been many placement students that have returned after completing their university degree. There is no graduate scheme but the placement year puts you in a good position to be able to apply for a job at the Co-op after finishing university.
The Culture
There was a good gang of us placement students that all lived in a close proximity to each other in Manchester and we enjoyed getting together on weekends and socialising. I had the same opportunities for socialising with colleagues at agri shows and various events.
The cost of living was in line with what the salary was.
The nightlife in Manchester was very good, there were also bars and food places around the office building to be able to go after work/evenings
Yes fortunately Manchester is a busy and bustling city and there was plenty to do in the city.
