The Role
The internship, although in a virtual format was fantastic. We were given two projects to complete over the duration of the internship, which culminated in a presentation for each. We had access to a wealth of resources, from industry professionals to those working within JP Morgan itself. I always felt comfortable and at ease and I met some incredible people along the way. Everyone I met wanted to support and help me and I felt like this was a place in which I belonged.
The team that I worked with was incredible. From the first moments, we really gelled well together and we were able to create work that we were proud of. It was a pleasure to work with my teammates throughout the course of the internship. There was a constant atmosphere of wanting to help and support one another but also it was incredibly satisfying to see us grow as a group together, throughout the course of the internship.
The support and guidance provided by my managers was second to none. We had two project managers as well as a project advisor, so we always felt like there was a wealth of support and advice available. The HR team were also very helpful in helping the interns get to know one another, whilst the grads that we were paired with (who acted as our mentors) really ensured that we were well looked after during the internship.
Our workload varied on a day-to-day basis. As you would expect, at the start of the internship, our time was mainly taken up by training or listening to talks from subject experts. As time progressed, the workload steadily began to increase, but with the support of my team and my managers we were able to equally allocate the work to ensure that everybody was able to produce the best work they could. I never at any point felt overwhelmed.
I thought that I was given a fair amount of responsibility during my internship, given the circumstances. We were each able to experience leading team meetings and organising our time for the week. Although we were guided by our advisors, the final decisions ultimately lay with us. We were able to see the consequences of our actions, as well as the impact of the decisions that we had made. We were given enough freedom and did not feel overly restricted.
We received a large amount of training in Microsoft Excel as well as in creating professional PowerPoints using PitchPro software. As I enter the working world, these skills will be very useful and will certainly be applicable in my future career. With regards to my degree studies, there is not an exceptional amount of crossover, however picking up soft skills like teamwork and communication as well as organisational skills will certainly help me at university.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the virtual environment was fantastic. There was a fair balance between working hard and having fun. We were able to develop relationships both on a personal and on a professional level. There was a culture of supporting one another as well as learning from one another. There certainly was a culture of producing the best work possible in an environment where honesty and integrity were paramount. It was a pleasure to work with those on my team as well as my managers.
The internship was incredibly well organised. Given the circumstances and the fast adaptation to a virtual environment, the HR team did an exceptional job in ensuring that the internship run smoothly. We had a security check to ensure that all of the students were able to access the required technology in advance of the start date. Deadlines were made very clear to all of us, as well as what was expected of us and how we would be assessed.
The firm invested in incredible amount in all of us. The trainings were of a high quality and the managers insured that we were able to develop and ensured that we understood how we could improve. Senior members of the bank were more than happy to give up their time to impart their knowledge onto us. The mandatory training modules that we had to complete gave us a sense of personal development, all of the live seminars provided by the firm were very professional.
Working from home
Healthcare from home
Future employment prospects look good, with the firm indicating that they are willing to hire. I was lucky enough to secure a full-time offer and I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity especially taking the current climate into account. I'm incredibly excited to start working for this company and to contribute as much as I can over the next two years. After the grad scheme has finished there is a very high rate of progression in securing a permanent full-time role.
The Culture
I thought that within my group there was a great sense of unity and togetherness, However due to the distance nature of our work it was hard to build up any meaningful relationships with those outside of my group. Although the HR team did try to put on social events it is hard to get to know everyone over Zoom! I am certain that had this been an in-person experience, the social scene would have been very good.

The interns for social good initiative was fantastic. We were able to participate in a virtual activity where We were able to create detailed maps for currently unmapped rural areas based on satellite images alone. They also organised a virtual quiz night which was done by a professional quiz company. The graduates were amazing in organising events. For example they were able to create a virtual escape room activity as well as organising virtual treasure hunts.
