About You
I was learning new things every day with a mix of different activities such as classroom-based learning, group hackathon and on-desk allocation. Although it can be slightly overwhelming at the beginning, i enjoyed it a lot.
It was very easy to reach out to others within the bank and everyone was very friendly and willing to help whenever I had any questions or trouble working through my tasks. Useful feedbacks were also given consistently.
The support given was phenomenal, especially when the interns had problems using the online communication platform. The IT team was always available. Besides, my team and the HR team gave a lot of reassurance over the 2 months and they were constantly encouraging us to ask any questions that we had without feeling intimidated.
This internship definitely helped boost my confidence in terms of reaching out for help and advice as this habit was highly encouraged by almost everyone I met in the bank. Besides, I learned how to handle pressure better in terms of juggling my different tasks at the same time. My presentation skills also improved significantly as the interns were required to present quite a few times which I think was very helpful.
The Company
It was extremely well structured as it consisted of a good balance of classroom-based learning, group activities and on-desk allocation. I managed to communicate well with my fellow intern friends as well as my team and others from the other departments through calls and email chats.
It was really positive because everyone was very friendly and nice. RBC gave me the impression of being able to work in a "family-like" environment which I enjoyed a lot.
We were invited to various meetings, not just the one with our teams, but also introduction calls with other department heads so that we were able to understand what they do better. My manager also invited me to calls in which they discussed about their new upcoming projects even though I wasn't part of it. This made me feel valued and I was able to get a better overview of their job scope.
I was given real tasks to do on an everyday basis although it may seem trivial to my team. However, I was able to have a better grasp of what their daily, weekly and monthly routine were. The finance team also gave briefings to the interns on what they do by scheduling training calls with us on a daily basis so I was being kept busy throughout the whole internship.
I managed to get a very good understanding of RBC's culture during this internship whereby they work alongside one another with very positive energy. Everyone was super approachable and communication among the employees was surprisingly very efficient although working virtually can be seen as daunting for some people.
The working culture and people in RBC made me realize how important it is to be working in a positive and "family-like" environment. This gave me the reassurance that I want to work in RBC. Besides, I was also given the opportunity to learn how and what does the finance team really does and I enjoy doing what I did when I was interning. Hence, these two are the main factors of me choosing my future career.
Everything Else
We were given our monthly salary, as well as extra allowances for settling down in London and equipment that will help us work better from home.
The opportunities to meet and network with others were excellent as the HR and Finance team scheduled various different training calls with the heads of different departments, even outside of the finance department so that the interns are able to ask questions and understand their work better.
Phenomenal. We had calls set up almost every day towards the end of our internship. We were given the opportunity to network with the top management people and ask whatever questions we had in mind. Besides, we were also encouraged to reach out to whoever we are interested in and set up our own meetings during our own free time which I did and it helped a lot as well.
Yes, we were given introduction calls about their non-work initiatives and their employee resource groups. We had the choice to join whichever groups that we are interested in.
Definitely, I have been recommending this to my juniors as I thought it really was a fun and eventful experience.
