    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved my placement, the people were all so welcoming and the experience gained was incredible valuable to the remainder of my university experience. It did also confirm which career path I wanted to take in the future, which was in fact not the department I was put in for my placement. I would recommend a placement with FG to anyone, I was offered a job at the end of my placement which I took without second thought in the Rural department.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues, I was given a variety of responsibilities within the department - which I was not anticipating and was very grateful for. I wasn't just the tea and coffee maker! I would recommend FG placement to anyone, it really did make a difference to my outlook of my future career choice. I felt part of the team by the time I left my placement, and that really has helped my confidence.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a large amount of support, to the level that even when I went back to university after my placement I kept in touch with my line manager and she supported me with a range of my university assignments. Everyone within the office was incredibly approachable which meant no question was ever too silly! We had weekly meetings to say what our job amount was, which meant you were never left without something to do, but equally never felt like you had too much on to keep up with - an important balance.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on a daily basis, I was provided with a fantastic range of work so that I had a mix of office work and site visits. There was never a dull day. I was also given the opportunity to build a rapport with clients which was invaluable, and it massively built my confidence within the office environment, particularly being more confident with speaking to clients on the phone and having confidence with what I was saying.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a variety of responsibilities within the department - which is not always the case with work experience. I felt trusted within the team to carry out a variety of work, but at the same time I felt able to ask for help when I needed it. I felt valued within the team, and felt sad to be leaving at the end of the placement time. However I feel confident that I could ask anyone within that office for help if I ever need it.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It really helped me with my final year at university, as I could relate more to the assignments set due to the fact that I had had experience within the industry rather than just what I was learning from my lecturers. Beyond university, it particularly helped me choose the pathway I wanted to take, as I learnt that although I loved my time with utilities I would rather be in a rural department - and consequently from my placement I was given the opportunity for a full time job with FG - I haven't looked back!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A kind, bubbly and friendly atmosphere which meant by the end of my placement I felt more than comfortable to approach anyone within the office to ask for help or reassurance. Everyone was incredibly approachable, and they were more than just colleagues. An example of this was the fact everyone celebrated each others birthdays, and at the end of my placement I received a really genuine thank you which really ended it on a good note for me.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Incredibly well organised and structured, with an array of work lined up from the get-go - which made settling into office life that much easier, as theres nothing worse than having nothing to do. I was able to join a number of people on a variety of work in and out of the office, consequently leaving my placement with such a good variety of work experience which has since then helped me enormously - and also helped my confidence.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot. I was included in all of the CAAV and APC days even though I wouldn't be sitting it for a few years, showing that they were happy to invest into someone even if I didn't end up getting a job with them. This shows that it's not all about the money side with them, and that they genuinely want everyone to succeed and have the best possible experience whilst working with the firm.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Travel loan

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • From my 8 week placement I was offered a job with Fisher German which I took without any doubts, as they offered me a place in the Rural department - the department I stated I would like to be in in my 'end of placement' interview. I am looking forward to my future career with Fisher German, as I am only one month in. I have loved my first month with the Rural team and would recommend it to anyone.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely. This included competitive department rounders matches followed by going to the pub, pub lunches on special occasions and just a genuinely friendly atmosphere. You could really tell everyone cared about each others social well being and supported each other. The social side of the firm was an integral part of the reason I joined Fisher German as a full time employee - and I haven't looked back! A really friendly firm on a personal level.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in the area was around £350 per month for rent in the area. The social side was fantastic and made spending the money well worth it - I left feeling as though I had made real friends and that they weren't just colleagues - which is not always the case within a work space from my previous experiences. It was fairly cheap as far as places go, but I managed to get a lot out of not spending very much.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life that I heard about was great, however at the time I enjoyed trips to the pub a bit more than going out. However the option and invitation was always genuinely there, and if I was there for a long period of time I definitely would have joined in - it was a really sociable bunch of people, but there was more to socialising than just going out clubbing which was really nice.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes lots.
