The Role
Overall my placement was good because of the people I got to work with and the responsibility I had; however the corruption experienced by my manager and the leadership team made work a huge struggle and ultimately made myself and the other interns excited to leave.
I felt valued outside of my department helping a lot of people and found were then coming to myself for help. However I did not feel valued by my manager I often had to pick up their work to ensure it was being done but the credit was then taken elsewhere so it got to the point where if you asked my manager you’d be told I was just an intern but if you asked anyone else they would say I’d done well.
My manager was promoted to a manager without being adequately trained or with the competencies to manage. Several occasions my skills and contributions would be put down. And corruption was high and on one occasion I spoke out and was reprimanded hugely for speaking out where I was told I’m the subordinate and they are the manager and I need to remember my place as I am a let down. This is no way to speak to an intern who is here to learn. The work placed on the manager often fell into my lap as the work would never be done and when mentioned to the intern programme support staff I achieved 0 help.
I had days where I was very busy and days where I was not. This was not a complaint or issue with Eaton it seems similar in most roles where some days there is an increase in work and some days there is little work to do. Overall I enjoyed the pace of my work and the balance of time in meetings and time in the office that I had whilst on my placement year.
I had a lot of responsibility whilst on placement and definitely succeeded the role of an intern and often found people shocked when I reminded them I was in fact an intern and would be leaving soon to go to university. The responsibility is not given to everyone so you must demonstrate that are you are worthy and ask for it yourself from your managers or from other areas of the business. I enjoyed this part.
The Company
I enjoyed working with a particular colleague in my office. We were a small team so was able to bounce ideas accordingly off of eachother whilst was especially helpful in the early days of my placement when I was finding the ropes and where I fitted into the organisation and making valuable contracts and relationships with people within the business. Was good in my office liked my team members no complaints from me for that.
It was ok. We had intern training sessions however these were not about topics that were valuable or useful they covered topics such as when to send an email or when to ring someone. The recruitment process was shambolic with people being sent home mid assessment centre and only four being promoted to the interview stage but without informing candidates there’s an option they may need an earlier train and I found out a month and a half after the assessment day that I had the job when it should have taken a week.
I now have first aid training
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
They don’t do graduate schemes in huge amounts and not in what I would want.
The Culture
Worked with two other interns and various apprentices
I commuted from home so am unsure on the prices in the area I was in
Again I didn’t experience this
There’s a sports and social club however this was not aimed at our age group so unless you plan dinner with your team there aren’t any clubs to get involved wirh
