The Role
I completed a 12 month work placement at The Walt Disney Company ltd, and I would do it all over again if I could! I had a really enjoyable time, got to create new memories and experiences, attended plenty of networking events, volunteered in charity events, made valuable friends and acquaintanceships. I enjoyed my placement as I got to learn plenty of new things and found myself developing significantly over the period of my placement.
I was lucky to be surrounded by amazing people at the office. I worked with many teams to bring together a valuable, final result. All team members were friendly, polite and communicative, allowing a comfortable 'work colleagues' environment to be created. My colleagues were also appreciative of my work & contribution, and always gave credit where it was due. I felt quite valued by my coworkers, who were always open to my thoughts and ideas.
I was lucky to receive continuous support and guidance from my manager and team. I was encouraged to work on my career and personal development, without any limits in the latter. There were plenty of personal as well as career development courses available on-site, and I was encouraged by my manager to attend as many as I could. I found this support from my managers invigorating and I was glad to be able to attend these courses.
The workflow at The Walt Disney company was always changing, seeing that we were in a quite dynamic environment. I was usually pretty busy with daily tasks (ranging from everyday to once a week) and peer review requests from my coworkers. There were days which were more relaxed, while other days were challenging with the amount of workload received. However, nothing was too challenging thanks to the help and support from my fellow team members and colleagues.
I was quite surprised by how much responsibility was given to an intern, especially as soon as I joined. I was responsible for updating Disney's homepage for EMEA (for movie releases and trailers, updating show schedules, terms and conditions and much more), consisting of over 20 countries. I was also responsible for updating apps and uploading critical, digital content. I was also responsible for creating pages, reviewing documentation by my fellow peers and trouble shooting.
While working at The Walt Disney Company for a year, I recognized a lot of transferable skills development within myself, for both personal and career. Thanks to the continuous feedback and training I have received, I'm confident the skills I have gained will be invaluable for my future career. Thanks to my organizational, interpersonal and prioritization skills expanded during my time at The Walt Disney Company, I am able to do better for my degree.
The Company
The company invested very well in my personal and career training and development. There were daily programs and courses offered, and the placement students as well as other employees were greatly encouraged to attend. All courses were free, extremely professional and very well laid out. Some courses lasted for half an hour while some were full day courses, some even went on for a few days s. The amount of knowledge received was exceptional !
The Culture
There was a pretty good social scene amongst the placement students, we were encouraged to get to know each other well in the beginning and were presented with plenty of opportunities to do so. Due to that, we were able to form close relationships and enjoy each others company during work and other social events. The interns were pretty friendly and we would normally have lunch together and support each others work if needed .
The cost of living and socialising was slightly expensive, which can be expected when you're working close to central London. However, Disney's pay is quite ample for an intern and it was enough to cover most of the costs, including rent, bills, transport, food costs etc. The Walt Disney Company was also generous enough to sponsor many socialising events where costs were covered, allowing us to enjoy the event and get to know each other better
