The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at Eaton, Worksop as an Electrical Engineering Intern. Right from the start, placement challenged my problem solving skills and my technical ability.
Being apart of the Technical Support Department, I felt welcomed and valued during my time at Eaton. My colleagues made an effort to make sure that I was comfortable, and any question I had they were willing to help. Whilst working on the main project, I felt that my team were supportive and treated me like I was on the same level and not as a student.
The support I received by my Manager was top tier. He would always encourage me to ask questions no matter how obvious the answer may have been.
From the start of the placement, I had to learn new skills such as object-oriented programming, database management, software development, project management and plenty more. So it was a steep learning curve, which meant that I was often very busy learning and developing these new skills.
I was given a lot of responsibility, as I was given the role of project lead on a very important project.
I believe that the skills that I have developed during my time at Eaton , will definitely aid my degree; especially project management as I am currently working on an individual project at university.
The Company
The atmosphere of the office was always cheerful and warm. Everyone was considerate towards one another.
At the start of the internship, I did not really know what my role would entail until I received my job description. I think it would help detailing what is expected of an intern in different divisions.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
I am definitely applying to Eaton's Graduate program next year.
The Culture
Unfortunately I was the only intern at my site so apart from the intern training days, I was unable to really socialise with the other interns.
Where I was living the cost of rent was around £520, this was for an ensuite; with a communal laundry room and kitchen. There is an ASDA, Tesco and Sainsburys near the site. A car is needed to get around as the buses are not frequent. I found that there was not much to do in Worksop, so I did not have the opportunity to do much socialising in the area.
There is a few pubs in Worksop. The main nightlife would probably be in Sheffield/ Mansfield.
At my site, there were outside activities to be apart of such as; speaking at a school about STEM subjects.
