The Role
The placement did have it's ups and downs, I enjoyed it when I was busy but when work was a bit slow I struggled to enjoy the job.
No one in the office really knew I was a placement student and was treated like a normal employee.
My manager was not in control and did not know much about what I needed within the year, I had to rely on others within my team for work, help and guidance.
My job was based on communications, so if there was a lot that needed communicated or a lot of events then I was really busy. When there was not much work going on I struggled to keep occupied within the office.
I worked directly with the CEO and other employees high up within the company which involves a lot of responsibility. I do not imagine many placement students get the chance to work with people such as the CEO.
As the placement was not what I signed on for (I originally came to do Marketing but was moved to Internal Communications after I had started) I do not think this will help with my degree, however, I now know that I do not think I wish to carry down the communications side of a business, although I have no gone into another communications summer placement. The placement did let me see how life was like working in a large multinational company.
The Company
As I worked in Central London, the people in the office changed daily depending on who had meetings in the building. This meant that when a lot of people were around the office was really lively and fun, however certain days (especially Fridays) were completely dead in the office so I rarely went in and worked from home (great perk to the job!)
At the start it was a bit unorganised as I received my contracts really late, but once I got stuck into my team and worked out who to get work from it seemed to flow a lot more.
I didn't do any formal training during my time there however I did learn invaluable skills from being in a professional working environment.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Financial Bonus
Working from home
The graduate scheme looks a lot better than the placement scheme I was on based on the graduates at the company and I would really like to go back and do it.
The Culture
The social aspect was what you made of it. If you didn't socialise you didn't go out much.
London is a very expensive place to live, however I like to go out and do things so I made sure I always had money for it.
It's London! Amazing nightlife once you know where to go
There wasn't much in the London office that was organised as such but I know in other offices there were more activities to get involved with.
