About You
I really enjoyed this placement and felt that I got a good feel for the firm despite it being done virtually. The placement was organised in a way that allowed us to speak to different people within the firm across a variety of practice areas, allowing us to gain greater exposure. We had the chance to try tasks in a few practice areas. We also participated in virtual social events which was a good opportunity to get to know each other in an informal setting.
I felt that everyone I spoke to during the course of the placement had a genuine interest in getting to know me as an individual. I got a real sense that the people involved were invested in us by spending time speaking with us, answering questions honestly and giving practical advice. This was particularly helped by the small number of participants in the scheme, which really allowed us to have more meaningful conversations than if there were many participants.
Before and during the scheme, I felt well-supported and that I could ask any questions I had. Particularly, we had the opportunity to have 1:1 conversations with a trainee buddy and a supervisor, which allowed for more personalised guidance and advice. The Graduate Recruitment team were also always available to answer any questions we had and each stage of the process was clear, transparent and supportive. Despite the scheme being virtual, I got a real sense of support.
The placement scheme provided me with a deeper insight into the work of solicitors across a variety of different practice areas. This helped me to learn which areas I might be interested in, as well as introducing me to some new ones. I also had the opportunity to complete some typical trainee tasks, which allowed me to understand how the role of a trainee fit into the bigger picture. Further to this, we had a few opportunities to give presentations which has definitely helped me to develop my ability and confidence in this area.
The Company
The week was extremely well-structured, which was particularly appreciated given its virtual nature. The week was well-organised and we knew exactly what we would be doing each day which helped with preparation and to calm any nerves. There was a good balance of talks, tasks, breaks and socials which provided variety to the placement and made sure that the week wasn't overwhelming. I appreciated the socials, particularly one at the beginning of the week which helped to get to know one another and relax.
The general atmosphere was extremely positive and encouraging. All of the people from the firm seemed like they genuinely wanted to speak with us and give their insights, which I really appreciated. Even during the assessment centre process, I felt that the interviewers wanted to get the best out of me and that they were not there to trip me up. The group task and socials really allowed the participants to get to know each other which helped to foster a positive environment.
There was a personal aspect to this experience which I really appreciated, such as being able to speak 1:1 with a trainee and an associate. We had been matched up to align with our interests which worked really well as it was easy to relate and to ask any questions I had. I also really enjoyed the soft-skill sessions we had which really allowed us to reflect on our strengths and achievements, as well as what we would like to work on and our goals.
From the placement week, I got a real feel for what a full time role as a trainee would consist of by speaking directly with trainees, hearing about trainee roles in different practice areas and hearing about the firm's overall strategy. The tasks we were asked to complete also gave a great insight into the kind of tasks a trainee would be asked to undertake, which allowed for a greater understanding of the day-to-day role itself.
As far as possible with the scheme being virtual, I do feel that I got a great feel for the culture of the firm. This was predominantly achieved through speaking to people and hearing about people's experiences. It was also great to see people at the firm interact with one another, which gave me a better insight into the culture. People seemed happy to be there and enthusiastic about their work and opportunities within the firm.
Participating in this scheme confirmed to me that I wanted to pursue this career path, as well as opening my mind to some of the unique practice areas within the firm that interest me. From the tasks, I got a good feel for what the role would entail and what I could learn. I found that the firm's strengths aligned with my interests, which drew me to the firm. Hearing about the opportunities for professional and personal development within the role was exciting and insightful.
Everything Else
Yes, there were opportunities to meet people from across the firm through presentations, assigned buddies and supervisors and through the socials. As this placement was virtual, this element was of course not quite the same as if it had taken place in the office, where you would usually be able to introduce yourself to people on your floor. However, the experience was replicated to the best standard that it could have been given the circumstances.

Yes, we had a talk on the pro-bono, societies and social aspect of the firm. We heard about how this can really enhance the training process and provide a trainee with the chance to get to know others across the firm or gain more responsibility. We heard more about the inclusion networks, which people were passionate and excited about. We also had the chance to speak to those who had previously been on secondments, which was insightful.
I would highly recommend this experience to a friend. It was very well-organised, I was able to learn a lot about the firm and develop my own knowledge and skills. All of my interactions with people at the firm were very positive and encouraging. At all points, any questions were welcomed and met with enthusiasm to answer, which I particularly appreciated. Despite difficult circumstances, the experience was really positive and I am grateful to have taken part in it.
