Overview
I worked on an independent research project which fed into the team's overall work. On a typical day, I would have a short meeting at the start to discuss what I would be working on; then spend much of the rest of the day on my research project, testing new ideas (writing code, researching in the literature), and writing a report on what I had done.
Skills
I learnt new skills such as SystemVerilog and RTL design and verification techniques, and developed my skills in Python and version control systems.
Responsibilities
I was given full responsibility of my research project, although the project was ultimately unsuccessful so I don't know how much impact it will have. Had it been different, then I definitely think it could have been useful to the team in the future.
Support & Guidance
My internship was during the Covid pandemic, so it was difficult being remote. But I think the team worked hard to support me, and it is difficult to think of anything they could have done differently. I think had I been in the office, it would have been a very supportive and friendly environment.
Culture
I didn't get a huge sense of the general company atmosphere due to remote working in the Covid pandemic, but I felt there was a reasonably strong sense of team spirit, and the HR team did organise social events for the summer placement students.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship a lot, I think I learnt a lot of both specific industry skills, and broader ideas about the direction of my future career.
Yes
The staff are very friendly, I'm sure the HR team is very willing to field questions if you're unsure which position you would be most suited for. I applied to 3 or 4 different positions and had a conversation with HR about which would be best for me.
