Overview
For the duration of the week my role was to attend the talks and breakouts. Engaging with speakers and my fellow students was encourages and I did so frequently. After the initial week my role was to be a proactive member of a team, assisting my teammates wherever possible and carrying out the work I was assigned.
Skills
I developed my team work skills through the group work. I also feel I became better at, and more confident, asking questions and engaging in general, such as when we had speakers. I think this was because it was so encouraged and I wanted to make a good impression.
Responsibilities
For the project I was the team leader which gave me some responsibility, but my team was very supportive and hardworking, so I don't feel I had the weight of the team on my shoulders alone.
Support & Guidance
Fantastic support and guidance. Brian, Kelly and Mollie were always really quick to answer questions including emails, and were always really encouraging. Also, Brian in particular acknowledges the barriers faced when beginning a career in conservation, which made me feel much better about the struggle I am having to find a job, and in that sense I felt I had some personal, as well as academic support. Guidance was provided by choice of fantastic speakers.
Culture
Really friendly and engaging. Brain, Mollie and Kelly seem to all get on really well which immediately makes newcomers feel relaxed and ready to learn. They seem to be a cohesive team which is encouraging for pursuing a similar job.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement to the extent I was very disappointed when it ended. The speakers were al really interesting and useful, and Mollie, Brian and Kelly were great for giving guidance and generally running the week. I found it to be well planned out with breaks for refreshment keeping engagement up. The attitudes of the Hengistbury Head team made a really cheerful and enjoyable atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this placement.
Yes
Just be yourself, if you love conservation that will speak for itself and I think the Hengistbury Head would pick up on that, and see you in a favourable light because of it.
