Overview
We were welcomed by the head of graduate recruitment and development each day. Also, there was a trainee spotlight session everyday which was very helpful and insightful because they were able to share their journey and how they got to the position that they are in now. Over the few days, many tips and advice was shared when going through an application process and job interviews which definitely will be used in the future and was worth noting.
Skills
I definitely developed new skills, the application skills workshop and navigating the virtual world allowed me to understand what employees are looking for and how to showcase your skills. The talk on imposter syndrome helped in the aspect that it made me realise that everyone can feel nervous sometimes and how I can deal with it in a professional setting for example preparing for an interview. Furthermore, DLA Piper really highlight the skill and importance of team work, nearly every person that spoke mentioned the significance of team work especially during COVID-19, therefore that's something I will be adopting in the future when working with other people.
Business Insight
It was very interesting because a lot of people get carried away with the fact that DLA is a global law firm and all the amazing things about it, but the trainees and senior partners were very honest with what their day to day job can look like therefore it leaves you questioning whether this is the right kind of workplace you can see yourself working in and the personality and attitude of the firm. (this isn't a bad thing).
Culture
The trainees, the senior partners and graduate recruitment were absolutely lovely to speak to, everyone was very welcoming and positive. Nearly everyone mentioned team work and togetherness at some point. Therefore, you can definitely tell that the firm takes care of their staff and have a very kind attitude towards meeting their clients needs.
Your Impressions
I definitely enjoyed and felt very welcomed in the insight programme. It was very insightful and enlightening. I 100% recommend to anyone that wants to apply because the team are lovely and you gain a lot of knowledge about the firm and develop many skills which will be very helpful in the future when applying for training contracts and jobs.
Yes
Just give it a shot! what's the worst that's going to happen, nothing. If you don't get accepted then its fine, you can move forward from that. Be yourself because that's what the firm is looking for, someone authentic and themselves, the firm is very diverse and inclusive so the way you present yourself will mean a lot. Also, do your research on the firm and when you are applying for a position make it specific to the firm.
