Overview
There were a variety of different presentations, workshops and networking opportunities each day. For example, the first day included a presentation based on a high-profile disputes case, a presentation on the advocacy group of the firm, an alternative disputes resolution workshop and a networking event with solicitors from different departments. This gave a great insight into the firm as lots of information was provided about the work carried out in various departments and the typical work and responsibilities taken on by trainee solicitors.
Skills
The alternative disputes resolution workshop allowed me to develop new mediation skills whilst also developing my existing critical analysis skills as we given the opportunity to work through a mock mediation in our groups. This was particularly valuable as it was the first time I had taken part in an ADR based workshop. The case study workshop, which focused around giving advice on completing the case study interview at the vacation scheme assessment centre, also allowed me to develop my critical analysis skills as we were taught how to focus on the small details within the text and to apply the key facts to various situations.
Business Insight
Speaking to the trainees and associates during the networking event really helped me to gain an insight into how the firm functions and the relationship between departments and between the different offices internationally. The department careers fair also helped me to consider which departments I may like to request to sit in during future vacation schemes. The applications workshop informed us of the vacation schemes and other opportunities that we are eligible to apply to in the next academic year.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere was very positive overall. The graduate requirement team and all the various trainees, associates and partners who spoke to us during the workshop all seemed very friendly and approachable. During the networking session, I found that it was repeatedly said just how nice the people of the firm are to work with and just how easy it is to ask for help. The social event at the end of the first day reinforced this view as all those involved from the firm were happy, helpful and easy to talk to.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight thoroughly. The opportunity to work in groups to complete the mediation task in the ADR workshop was particularly enjoyable as it allowed us to turn our cameras and microphones on so there was a greater deal of interaction and collaboration. Networking with the solicitors was also extremely enjoyable as we were able to hear a first hand account about what working at the firm is really like. I also particularly enjoyed the Pro-Bono presentation as that was one of the things that drew me to the firm initially.
Yes
Think through the application questions carefully and where you can you should use your previous experience to back up what you're saying (e.g. I have strong adaptability skills which can be demonstrated through my experience of...). Include all work experience, not just law work experience. Most work experience can be related in some way to the skills required of a lawyer so whether it is waitressing or volunteering at a summer camp, it is worth adding to your application. However, ensure you demonstrate how it is relevant through the skills that you gained/further developed.
