Overview
The first day offered webinars and a virtual social 'treasure hunt'. The second and third days offered seats in a different practice area each day. I was allocated a 'buddy' who was a trainee, and a supervisor who was an associate. There was a mix of real and simulated trainee tasks, and three calls with my supervisor and trainee to check in. There were also lunch seminars. The final day was a group exercise.
Skills
I developed my research skills, and learned to be more selective and concise when presenting the information. I also developed an awareness of the audience of a piece of work, whether a letter, a presentation, or a research summary. I have also become more comfortable in speaking to professionals - something I have not had that much exposure to at university.
Business Insight
Whilst I understood the roles on offer and some of the key elements of the business, the opportunity to experience the day-to-day activities of a trainee very much helped me understand the nature of the rules available. Furthermore, the opportunity to speak to trainees, associates, partners, graduate recruitment, and seminar leaders who run specific initiatives was excellent in helping me understand more about the culture of the firm, as well as its business strategy.
Culture
The culture was extremely friendly and welcoming. Although I was in each practice area for a just one day, every supervisor and buddy made me feel extremely welcome and they always offered the opportunity for me to ask more questions, never making me feel like a burden. Despite the fact that the placement was virtual, the atmosphere and culture felt very 'open door'. Despite the fact that it was assessed, I felt encouraged not judged.
Your Impressions
There were many aspects I enjoyed: 1) socialising with other vac schemers, who were all very friendly, 2) speaking to trainees, associates, partners when they offered up their time, 3) being involved in some bits of real work which I was able to see on newspaper headlines the next day, 4) learning more about the firm through webinars, 5) being part of a firm that takes a friendly culture, diversity, and inclusion seriously.
Yes
