Overview
Albeit virtually, we were able to attend several practice group presentations throughout the week and participate in a number of department-specific tasks. We were also able to meet members of the firm more informally through 1:1 meetings with trainee buddies and Associate/Partner supervisors and socials. We also attended an assessment centre halfway through the scheme.
Skills
Through the tasks we were assigned, I developed my researching skills as well as my proof-reading and drafting skills. One of the tasks involved a presentation to the wider group so it was important to have coherent communication skills as well.
Business Insight
The scheme was incredibly effective in allowing us to adopt a greater understanding of Stephenson Harwood as a firm at large as well as the practice groups within it. Through presentations, Q&A's and 1:1 meetings with solicitors at the firm, we were given a really in-depth understanding of how trainees at the firm are supervised and involved in their teams.
Culture
Everyone was so welcoming and friendly for the entire duration of the scheme. At every presentation, all speakers were open to any questions and I never felt judged negatively while I was at the firm. Even during my assessment centre interview I found that the partner genuinely wanted to get to know me as a person and everyone was very encouraging and enthusiastic.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight and getting to learn more about so many aspects of the firm. I felt that it was the perfect mix of learning about the substantive work that each department does and also getting to know the people of the firm on a more impersonal basis, allowing us to get such a true depiction of what the culture of the firm is like.

Be open to learning about all sectors at the firm and take advantage of all opportunities to ask questions and get to know solicitors working there.
