    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • During the day we had talks from various people including guest speakers and those working in different tax areas. We also had a panel with a range of people, from graduates in tax to senior members of the team to answer any questions we had. We also completed a case study in separate groups and some skills workshops. It was just one day but really useful and was very insightful. I would really recommend to everyone.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I learnt about the different areas of tax and during the case study learnt about changes to tax regulation during Covid-19. This helped me talk to new people and condense large chunks of material. It helped build my confidence as I asked questions and engaged with the day. I developed skills in listening and critical thinking skills. The guest speakers helped us with skills for applying to subsequent roles and how we present our ideas and ourselves.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Really helpful. Tax has so many areas that I was not aware of and this gave us a chance to ask questions to people working in a range of areas. We were also given a pack after that broke down all the potential roles available in tax. This is really helpful for not only EY roles but for financial services and other big 4 firms. You could as lots of questions to really help your understanding.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very friendly and inclusive. They encouraged everyone to participate, although placed no pressure and was open to all questions. We learnt about their inclusivity programmes which was great as it showed the support network they have in place when employed there. Many people, including graduates spoke about how they have a mentor and feel comfortable at EY and are included in meetings even at a lower level. The insight day was very friendly and I do believe EY is like that too.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed it and would recommend the experience. Although it was short, it was insightful, engaging and fun. I enjoyed all the aspects, particularly the case study and how friendly everyone was. It was a shame it was online but was still really fun, interesting and engaging. It is rare to hear from such senior employees as well as the range of different areas of tax. It is great to help figure out which area of business you would like to go into.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Research as much as possible to find the different areas of EY. Try to finish the application asap as it as numerous stages that need to be done within a certain time frame. Be yourself and show willingness to learn. In the numerical tests, have a calculator with you and when presenting your findings, pick a couple of aspects to talk about. They give you a lot of information so just be concise and clear.
