Overview
The overall spring insight programme spanned 3 days and was held from around 9am to 5pm each day. Every day included a variety of activities, including networking sessions with both other programme participants and representatives of the firm. There were informational sessions to help us understand about ESG, D&I and other initiatives within the firm alongside financial workshops and training. Interactive activities were also set everyday, allowing us to build our skills and understanding.
Skills
I've learnt new skills regarding equity research and financial analysis, particularly when understanding overall macroeconomic activity, how to study and select financial instruments and equities as well as how to draw parallels between global conditions and when optimal times for particular activities arise. I've also developed my confidence through networking and team challenges, interacting with people from different levels of the firm and showcasing teamworking ability through group work and asking relevant questions.
Business Insight
It was very useful to understanding about the business and potential roles: there was plenty of information given about different divisions and we were introduced to representatives working in these divisions for a deeper insight. There was also information given to us about the pipeline into future roles such as internships and graduate opportunities, and very useful tips given as to how to present ourselves well and build our presentation skills in advance of this. Overall, a fantastic insight into the business and how each function works and the activities carried out in each one alongside future opportunities.
Culture
The company culture was really positive - there was a clear sense of unity and pride within all the company representatives, with lots of information given about sustainability, diversity and community initiatives. Many frameworks have been put in place to support those of all genders, ethnicities, professional backgrounds and goals, with many opportunities to get involved with charity work through the organisation. Company wide activities also take place and it very much felt like a very friendly, welcoming organisation where the balance between work and enjoying social activities was very clear.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight week very much, there was a range of activities and variation provided for us to experience. I was initially more unsure of the programme being new to the finance industry, but there was a fantastic insight into the investment management industry, which has definitely encouraged me to go back to the firm for future opportunities. The culture was also very positive and friendly, and gives the impression of a lovely place to work!
Yes
I would advise people applying to Fidelity International to gain an understanding prior to the event of whether asset management might be right for them, and to have a look into different divisions slightly to gain an understanding of the types of questions they might want to ask during the programme. Additionally, I would recommend preparing well for the video interview to be ready for motivational and commercial awareness questions as well as checking and refining your initial application thoroughly.
