    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Had to attend many information sessions about the company's operations and organisational structure. We then focused on the variety of roles in the Engineering Division and how many of them are related to the main business. We were also given a case study about hedging strategies and split up to work in teams in order to produce a project. In the last day of events, we all presented to senior staff.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I definitelly developed my understanding of quantitative finance and was exposed to topics I had never heard of before. I enjoyed researching and implementing strategies with python. We were also given a couple of training sessions on how to complete HakerRank assessments.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I have established a firm understanding of the variety of different Strat/Quant roles and have formed a substantiated opinion about where I would like to work. I also learnt about which skills I should focus on developing to make my future applications more appealing to recruiters. The whole process was great fun and I was particularly happy to see that my peers were all very interesting people from different backgrounds and cultures

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The program organisers were very helpful and stayed in continuous communication with the class throughout the program. Everyone who spoke to us was very friendly and took our questions seriously. Apart from speakers, were were open to contact the entire employee network. I met with various analysts and managing directors who were all happy to engage in conversations. All this, paired with the excellent cohort of interns, made the experience enjoyable.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The experience was definitely one of a kind. It was a bit of a bummer that I didn't get to do it on site but the organisers did everything in their power to ensure an engaging online experience. The combination of industry specific knowledge, technical project and networking oportunities make this arguably the best internship a first year student could go to. I would definitely go back for next summer and hope I get selected

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Goldman Sachs Group
  • Be specific! It is definitely one of the main reasons I got in. Research the company, understand the divisions you are interested in to a reasonable extent and demonstrate how your unique experiences and interests can add value to their operations. Of course you aren't expected to know everything or the desk you want to work at, but getting further than cliche stuff is a necessity. More specifically to the field of Compuational Finance, which is my area of interest, I had attended algorithmic trading competitions, taken online classes and worked on a related project, thus I recommend engaging in activities which add value to your cv's. The HireView interviews didn't have any technical elements and were focused on HR related questions.
