Overview
Working with multiple teams in the software engineering department, including lots of programming, self driven learning, communicating with other departments that get affected by our work such as QA.
Skills
I have developed my programming skills (Python mostly), lots of general technical skills and useful skills for working in programming such as using GitLab and AWS. I also increased my soft skills including my ability to communicate effectively and how to work well remotely.
Responsibilities
I was given a good amount of responsibility, being given full reign over whole code repos to improve, edit and add new features to. Eventually I was able to take part in business critical work with time limits, but if I struggled there was always support. Also, I took part in an intern fundraising programme so I was able to take control over a whole fundraising campaign with a team of other interns.
Support & Guidance
At first it seemed like I was not getting loads of guidance but eventually I realised it was because I wasn't asking for any extra help so they assumed I was doing well. In the end, I was doing very well and got all the work done and started asking for more help when I felt a bit confused - the help and support was always given when asked for.
Culture
The atmosphere was very happy, caring and safe. There are people from all around the world and everyone is very accepting. The culture is definitely something all interns would feel super happy and excited about. Even going up to higher up management they were extremely open and supportive to everyone.
Your Impressions
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work for Disney and I had a good experience working there. The variety of tasks and work was vast so it was always an interesting day. The only thing that would make it better was if I could have worked in the offices, as I had to work remotely through the year of 2020/21. I visited the offices twice and enjoyed it very much.
Yes
The company culture is very relaxed and supportive so just be yourself at any interviews, be positive and talkative and really try to sell yourself. Also don't have set expectations of how it will be as anything can happen, but either way it'll be an enjoyable employment with the ability to make many many friends.
