Overview
I was involved in all aspects, I took part in day to day meetings with the team. I was responsible for my own real-life project which is actively used by the team , it was an incredible experience. I had one to one training available at all times, in addition to team based training and training provided for the org. I also contributed to the code base, and was actively involved in decision making.
Skills
I have learned many new technical skills throughout my placement: - SCALA http4s, ZIO and cats effect - terraform - AWS - Jenkins - drone.io - javascript - react - typescript I also developed my communication skills and presentation skills. My social anxiety has improved drastically. I am also able to write tickets and refine them. I have a much better understanding of the software development lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was treated like an everyday member of the team.I was given the same responsibilities and my tasks were treated the same way as any other task was.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support, I has 1 to 1 training available at all times. All members of the team offered me support when needed. I never felt like I was inferior , or that my questions weren't valuable. I was also given training in any area I wanted and was invited to take part in all activities. I also had my mentors and team members check on me on a regular basis.
Culture
It was an incredibly accepting and inclusive environment. We had regular sessions where we discuss any technical or general issues we had anonymously. Mental health is extremely important, and everyone is treated equally. My managers and directors and always involved which makes us feel like there is no social hierarchy. Every question is taken seriously and no question is stupid ! which made it easy for anyone to express how they felt.
