EMEA Publishing Intern Review

My role involved working closely with licensees, particularly in the emerging markets, Turkey, Israel and Greece. I often created presentations for these markets, showcasing the various Disney formats, inspiring publishers to pick them up. These close working relationships allowed me to build rapports with both internal and external employees. I often assisted in compiling marketing plans, as well as localisation plans for EMEA. I was given the responsibility of approving assets that were submitted to Disney from publishers, which were titles that used Disney characters and stories. I was also involved in contract amendments and sourcing market research data.

I have learnt a number of new skills during my placement at The Walt Disney Company. These include, having the opportunity to develop my professional etiquette, time management and organisational skills. I have gained a lot more confidence in Excel and learnt how to generate a white space report, which is a key tool in business when identifying opportunity in the market. I have learnt how to quickly adapt my working style to WFH and have learnt how to create strong business relationships, despite only being able to do so virtually.

I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my placement however I feel I would've been given more if I was working in the office (which has not been possible this year due to Covid 19). The tasks I were given to complete were extremely valuable to the team and the industry. My research played a key role in decision making. I was exposed to a number of LOBs throughout my placement and felt involved in my team. The biggest responsibility I was given was completing approvals as I did this unassisted and had to ensure I did not miss any details out that could damage Disney's image.

I received brilliant support throughout my placement. When I needed help on a task, or had any questions on the business structure or the industry, there were at least 4 people I would contact. I would always receive valuable help and never felt that I was asking a 'silly' question. The training I received at the beginning of my placement was so helpful and helped my confidence throughout. My collegues also checked up on me numerous times as they knew this year was challenging with a lot of people due to Covid 19. I also received great support from Swansea University, which set up bi-weekly calls with me so that I could discuss my progress and get any support that I may need.

The general atmosphere of the company was happy and upbeat. Everyone I had contact with was always positive and happy to help. One of the reasons I applied for Disney was that I knew that they are a business leading figure for Diversity and Inclusion. Throughout my placement, all employees received various Diversity and Inclusion training sessions as well as Q and A's with VPs, where these issues were discussed openly. The company also promote 'Women in Disney', which is supported by a large amount of employees. All employees receive weekly updates on the progress and positive news that revolves around these issues.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed my time working at Disney. It was a dream come true to work for such a large, global company that had a genuine positive impact on my childhood. I loved my team and feel like I have made great strong connections with them all, despite not being in the office. At Disney, I loved that there are so many opportunities to get involved in programmes outside of your role. I completed the Intern Charity Programme called Moment Makers, which I loved being a part of! It was extremely rewarding and great fun. I have loved my placement here and the Disney magic has been maintained throughout!

The advice that I would give to others applying to TWDC would be to do research about to company to ensure you stand out during the interview process. Add this research into your cover letter! When I have been reading cover letters for June's cohort I noticed a lot of the letters were quite generic. Find points online about the company, facts or data, and write about those and how they link to your skills/experiences. At the assessment centre, be chatting to the other candidates. Spark up conversations with candidates that may seem a little quieter. Your inclusiveness and ability to speak to strangers will be noticed!
