Overview
My role mainly consists of updating finance report files from partners, communicating internally with team members about costs, and updating budgets and actuals. Ad-hoc projects also take up a lot of time which vary month-on-month. These could be anything from subscriber modelling for a potential new launch territory to looking at an expansion of content in an established region.
Skills
I have learnt how to use different finance platforms such as SAP and SNAP. I have become familiar with the business model of an SVOD service in hayu; understanding the essential processes that have to be performed regularly. In terms of personal skills, the ability to communicate with my team and manage my own time/tasks has been very important due to working from home, so that has improved dramatically which I can take forward into my professional career.
Responsibilities
Yes, as the year progressed and I became more comfortable with the reporting and projects, I would present the findings/numbers to senior management after working on them. This gave me great presenting experience and confidence going forward. I would also send out various updates/monthly reports to the rest of the hayu business via email. This would be FX rates or transaction report data on a monthly basis.
Support & Guidance
My handover intern was extremely helpful with setting me up with the appropriate knowledge and skills to be able to perform tasks efficiently. My finance team in general have been helpful in terms of answering irregular questions I had about specific processes I had throughout my placement.
Culture
It is hard to look at the culture since I have been working from home. From team meetings however the atmosphere was always very friendly and warm; that makes you feel comfortable and that you have the chance to speak up.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the hayu/NBCUniversal team. Despite the experience being very different as I have spent most of the year working from home, I have been exposed to so many things in terms of how a finance team functions, and how important communication is within a finance team to run efficiently and effectively.
Yes
To be yourself in the interviews, as your personality is very important when assessing intern applicants. Also that it is a great company to work for- so go for it!
