Overview
I host one or several meetings most days, write scopes and actions from these. I analyse risks on the network using supply and demand forecasts and maintenance plans from other teams, this means speaking to different people every day and trying to understand what is important to each team so they can do their jobs with minimal risks. I have had multiple projects ranging from asset management to gas quality.
Skills
The system operator part of the business is fast paced and requires you to have good strategic decision making. I have developed many useful skills such as effective time management and communication to apply to other jobs and uni.
Responsibilities
Yes plenty of responsibility. At times it felt like a little too much because I was working from home in the pandemic and didn't have any experience sitting in on meetings and learning from others before I took responsibilities of these meetings and projects. Being able to listen in and watch others is very valuable. However if you were to work in the office this would be much easier.
Support & Guidance
It was good but there wasn't as much as I would have hoped. I only had one placement manager to rely on for everything and there wasn't a whole lot of communication from the National Grid academy which supports students. This was largely due to the pandemic and virtual working environment.
Culture
I liked it, very professional but also friendly and helpful. I had no problems.
Your Impressions
Overall I enjoyed it - it was definitely hard at times and I was pushed to achieve more than I thought I was capable of. Because of this I feel proud of what I have achieved and I am grateful to be given the work and responsibilities throughout my placement.
Yes
There were lots of opportunities to take on work and get out of your comfort zone, take them but also don't be afraid to ask for help!
